How about a bandolier to wear over the coat? There are some interesting ideas if you search "steampunk bandolier." Is your character a monster hunter/fighter type? Or more of a mechanic or engineer (think funky tools)?

I transformed a horrible yucky coat with the judicious use of buttons and some velvet like upholstery fabric...the coat was quite different but the idea is transferable...if you send me your email I can send you some pics I forget how to post pics in comments..

Equipment loops. But you must field test to ensure you don't get all hung up on the underbrush!
Reference some EMS/fire/rescue equip for inspirations re: "tactical utility belt" etc etc. If it's zombies, you'll probably want some infection control gloves, splatter mask, etc. etc.
