If you're like me, the only things you know about the Sargasso Sea are that it lends its name to a Jean Rhys novel and has something to do with the life-cycle of the eel. You may have wondered whether there was any connection between the two facts

How fascinating! So due to plate tectonics, the European eels can no longer breed.

That's the implication. In fact, as someone pointed out elsewhere, since this 1973 work was published some European eels have indeed been found to make it back, fully developed gonads and all, but Rhys was't to know that.
