I was talking to a Wiccan recently, and fervently recommending (as I often do) Margaret Mahy's The Changeover to her, a book I love for itself, but also regard - unless you know different? - as the very first YA supernatural romance. I recently re-read that, too and also thought it had held up really well. Better than Twilight, which I consider to be absolute trash and weirdly prudish (Meyer is LDS, which probably explains it). I read it because I watched the movie adaptation, which was awful (in spite of the presence of Lucy Lawless), terribly grimdark and no fun at all. The novel has scary moments and very high stakes, but it's also just like, a joy to read.

I saw the film, and was also rather disappointed, though I though Laura herself was well cast. I respect them trying to acknowledge post-earthquake Christchurch, but the tone, as you say, was all wrong.

Yeah the performances/casting I thought was fine, it was the writing/directing I didn't like.

I love The Changeover! I re-read with dread sometimes, fearing that I will finally notice something wrong with it, or fall out of love with it, but it still holds up really well more than 30 years later
