Once again, a totally *brilliant* chapter. It's so incredibly vivid and compelling writing...and I absolutely SEE House and Cuddy interacting.
I loved the idea of House distracting himself by plunging into learning German; of Cuddy's insecurities when confronted by April's impossibly slim thighs; of House and Cuddy compromising, with her choosing the movie and him choosing the restaurant; of their discussion about 'responsible parenting' and House's regrets at not having danced with Cuddy when he still had two good legs.
I love the sensuality of your depiction of both House and Cuddy (but particularly House). You show how he uses all of his senses to investigate the world around him. Your story is not merely HD - it's the full 3-D experience.
...And I will wait anxiously for the next installment. This is definitely going to be one of your best-fics-ever.
What, what what...one time thing, they won't speak about again, WHAT. Steveny, you are killing me here girl!
“Morning? You bring my six year old here after midnight?”
“Our six year old,” he dared her. “Because we’re a couple and we have joint problems - like Rachel’s ‘aggression issues’ at school. Right?”
So many gems in this chapter, buy also lots of ambiguity and uncertainty . Or maybe I'm just thick. I do feel the love though. House is Crazy about Cuddy:))
Even when they try, they cannot be normal and uncomplicated. It's not just Cuddy who thrives on conflict and challenge -- House does too, for all that he likes to believe he's only after one thing.
I imagined House sitting across from Rachel eating donuts and listening with half an ear as she complained about her schoolmates, some time ago. I can't develop that scene into a full fic, but I fell so in love with the picture that I had to work it in somehow. I wanted Rachel to have some problems, and not be this one-dimensional angel child. I thought Cuddy, would probably be most disturbed, and House most nonplussed (and bemused), by Rachel being a bully, so I gave her aggression issues on top of her struggles with math. The poor math reasoning (and good self esteem) would mystify House, and the aggression would mortify Cuddy.
??? Some sort of pidgin German? Yes, a type of House-speak.
