A van dyck has a upturned handlebar moustache and a pointed beard, non-attached.

What Steve has is a standard goatee.

I like the full scruff better, myself.

It's not a goatee. It is, in fact, much farther from goatee than it is from van dyck. A goatee is a long chin beard and nothing else. At least a van dyck has a mustache and the right general shape.

"Spade beard" is probably closer to what he (and I) have got. But if you're gonna get all semantic about the details of a van dyck, don't then call it a goatee.

The modern usage of van Dyke refers to almost any mustache and goatee combination.

A goatee only refers to a tuft of hair on the chin.

I vote for the full beard! I thought it looked awesome, especially how you had it trimmed all neat and it wasn't like, all over your cheeks. It looked very distinguished and cool. I don't know, in my opinion the Van Dyck makes you look a little like a child molester. The full beard made you look rugged and handsome.

I think it's got potential. Just need to let it fill out. Not quite handlebar territory, but almost that long, with the chin trimmed shorter than the rest.
