[Another day, and Riku's feeling fairly bored. He hasn't had a lot to say over the journals as of late, but hey, it's been a while. And with such an... interesting cycle, he might as well say something.

So, Lucetians, witness Riku as he boredly looks into this magical book and speaks.]So. I think it's pretty obvious that Luceti's got some ' ( Read more... )

[This is the sort of question that always drives Robert to want to answer it.

Still, his voice is awkward and uncomfortable, as it generally is.]

... On T-Terra, all sapients are... on equitable footing.

The sheer diversity of h-hominid forms here is... very fascinating, compared to my own... m-multiverse.

[A planet called Terra?

... hah. Well, Riku won't mind the awkwardness. He'll stay cool.]

Seems like most people aren't used to intelligent beings that aren't humanoid. Not that I can blame them. My world didn't have any, but as soon as I left home, I had to adjust.

Happens when you visit worlds with talking cards, puppets, and parrots.

[Parrots he can understand. Even puppets, maybe. But cards?]

... The organisms in s-some worlds represented by Luceti are... f-fascinating, to say the least.

The Head Institute would... h-have something of a field day, I expect...

Head Institute, huh? So what's their deal?

They are the... p-premier scientific institution of Terra... r-responsible for coordinating the efforts of science.

... Luceti has... p-provided examples of biota I did not even know was... possible. Not to mention world physics v-variations...

See, the thing is, science can only go so far when it comes to other worlds. Not to mention magic, the Heartless, and everything else I've seen.

Well... in terms of m-magic - I have been working on a... paranormal thesis, of sorts, s-since arriving in Luceti. ... Essentially, I... endeavour to find the u-underlying physical properties and mechanisms that govern magic...

[Surely they exist somewhere. Robert is pretty much determined to find them.

Unfortunately he never really will...]

... Er... "Heartless"?

Still seems pretty tough when magic varies from world to world.

[But hey, at least he's trying.]

Heartless are created when a heart gets overtaken by darkness.

There is... c-certainly a great deal of variation. I have yet to find any underlying c-consistent patterns that apply all the time... b-but there are some that are very common...

[Thoughtfully:] ... How does a heart become, er, "overtaken"?

Do you even mean the... er, a-actual organ...?

I'm not just talking about something that pumps blood. Where I'm from, hearts are made up of light and darkness. For a heart to get overtaken, you just have to plunge right into the darkness.

Some people use it for power. Others get wrapped up in their jealousy or hate. Either way, darkness is a pretty huge deal.

[Whether or not it's the actual organ... canon is too vague to really say.]

[All this abstract talk of light and darkness is not easy for Robert to follow. Still, he listens patiently.]

... So essentially, o-one becomes... taken over by one's negative emotions...? [That doesn't require anything paranormal in Robert's world, of course... but neither is it so dramatic.]

More than that. Their heart gets completely swallowed by it and separates from the body and soul.

That's how Heartless are created.

... Separates...? [He wasn't under the impression that hearts were things that were capable of being separated from a body. Then again, this is obviously more metaphysical.]

... Is this... a natural ph-phenomenon, in your world? Or does it... h-have to be artificially induced?

It's natural, but I'm sure it could happen artificially.

[Natural phenomena... he wonders how the mechanism even occurs. What's the tipping point? How do you get there?]

... Some worlds are so... very f-fascinating...

... Are there... p-people in your world that analyze these phenomena...?

Not back home; most people there don't even know about other worlds. But as for other worlds in my universe? Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me.

I know Organization XIII had at least one scientist on board, and their goal is to regain their hearts.
