I'm assuming it's because of THG fandom but had to give a wave to a fellow marine sci nerd. I did the grad school merry-go-round ride so best of luck to you there.
As for naming shit, I had tagged winter flounder (a href="http://www.elasmodiver.com/Fish%20Pictures/Winter_Flounder_002.jpg">these guys) with various names. I had a Gandalf in there for sure that I remember. In the thesis they all just got referred to by tag number--boo--but they did have names that are on my datasheets.

Pleasure to meet you! I just discovered you through crack_van (and should have introduced myself) and I've been gleefully making my way through your Haymitch fic. (Everyone is in the field but me this week, and I've been slacking off rather terribly without anyone around to keep me honest.) I'm LOVING every second of reading! Also, I'm really pleased that I'm not the only one who thinks of THG and Mumford & Sons as very complementary. Biological oceanographers have no sense of dignity. We just have a sense of fun, yo. I worked Alaskan fishing boats between undergrad and grad school as a fisheries observer and I worked on the BP oil spill postgrad, so I've got some stories.
Currently I'm with Louisiana Wildlife and Fisheries, so yep, still in marine sci, though I've got an interview with NMFS this week for a job that might work.
