Necessary evil, money.
That's what Charlie thought as he left the third Stoatshead Hill business establishment in a row to tell him they weren't hiring help.
We're still setting up shop...
...we don't have enough business yet to warrant the extra help...
...three people have their names in before you...
...check back in a month...
This was all a bit foreign to Charlie. He'd never had the type of job where he received a weekly paycheck. Mostly he'd been on expeditions where room and board were part of the compensation. If there was an additional stipend involved, he didn't usually need it in hand. He'd almost always have it forwarded to his bank account. Because of this, he had some savings, which had thankfully been located in a small Wizarding Bank abroad, and hadn't been lost in the war.
Things in Stoats being what they were, though, this small reserve was close to useless. He'd helped himself to the stores his mother had put away - canned vegetables and such - and had been able to barter or use small amounts of his Muggle money to buy bread and meat, enough to get by on these last couple of weeks while he was
fixing up the cider house.
But he needed a more longterm plan. He was realistic; he knew he'd probably never find work in his field, but he wasn't above taking whatever was available. But so far, it looked like what was available was next to nothing. Feeling a bit discouraged, he decided to take a quick break and get a bite to eat before starting out again.
Coming upon Socks, he remembered George having mentioned it once or twice, and knew it was his best bet for a cheap lunch. He opened the door and stepped inside, looking around to see if anyone else was eating this early.
