This is kind of massively outdated. Written prior to some... CANON understandings, his history and whatnot I'm going to have to rework. @_@
Original application link is
HERE. Note: for obvious reasons, my take on Enjin's canon (as it is neither confirmed nor denied) is that he died at some point, or had to kill his original body in order to get to the other side, or died in the process and had to possess Gin's body. Therefore some of this is headcanon, as either alive or dead has not much impact on the story.
[ Character's Name ] : Hiizumi Enjin
[ Character's Age ] : Dead 18.
[ Series ] : Yozakura Quartet
[ Canon Point ] : The end of chapter 32, after leaving the fight (right after killing her poor bear costume headpiece) with Yae. So more or less the start of chapter 33.
HUGE SPOILER WARNING IN THIS ENTIRE APPLICATION! Be careful!
[ History ] :
Tsun tsun dere tsun dere tsun tsun~
Ah, the town theme. This is the first impression anyone would get of Sakurashin-machi. They would also note it's a fairly carefree town; from it's (somewhat amusing) town song, down to its employees and townsfolk, it's a peaceful place. Humans and yōkai coexist peacefully here. Yōkai can otherwise be known as demons, which is a general term for a being with abnormal powers; from an Oni to a Jiang Shi--literally a dead corpse that lives again (with aid, such as Rin, who has sutras and a special pin that allows her to move). In most parts of the world where yōkai and humans exist, there is bitter fighting. Many humans, residents of 'our' world, view yōkai as poison or evil; even sometimes heartless or soulless creatures, if you're particularly keen on Biblical depictions of 'demons' or yōkai.
But this is not the case, as all the residents of Sakurashin town (including its young mayor) are well aware. In fact, yōkai are truly, when it comes down to it, no different from humans. They feel what we feel, can fall in love, and do everything we can. ... They're just generally stronger with supernatural powers. But the abnormal is the norm in this town! Both humans and yōkai go to school, eat, sleep, and live together, as the mayor, Yarizakura Hime, would have it. She herself is in actuality a yōkai of dragon descent, though the entire town was unaware of this. ... Keyword being 'was'.
Of course, her plan was working fine--when her grandmother died, Hime inherited (more or less) her job as mayor, which she took and still takes as a very serious job. She's so dedicated to understanding her town that, in fact, she asked the Goddess of its land (Shinatsuhiko Yae) to seal the memories of all the townspeople of her ever being a yōkai in the first place. Because of this, even her closest friends would not judge her powers and she could, as she put it, see from the perspective of "both human and yōkai", and be a better mayor.
That, of course, all changed many years later. But in order to explain properly the who and the (possible?) why, I must first explain the how...
You see, the Hiizumi family has existed for many generations. They, themselves, are known as 'tuners', and should also not technically exist in the human world. But they do, and are normal humans, even, except for the ability to send those who migrate from the yōkai world back there. Yes, yōkai can be in 'our' world (let's just call it side A, as they are fundamentally the same except for the inhabitants, who cannot see the people on the other planes--like ghosts, almost. That is to say, side A cannot see side B. It's like a coin), but they do not belong in it. This is where the Hiizumi family comes in... you see, they originally alone have the ability to sever all connections with the yōkai world and ours in a single yōkai, sending it back permanently, for good or ill. No one knows what the 'other' world is like.
The story you will hear about how the two worlds ended up connected... is unknown. What IS known is how many from the human world ended up in the yōkai side, though what Hiizumi Akina was told... was not entirely accurate. Oh, some of it is: the part about one of the first Hiizumis to be tuned into the other world to see what was there... well, sort of. The Hiizumis had a branch family; as nobility of sorts. But the tuning there... it was not to their will. Enyou and his clan were tuned as human sacrifices to the other side... by his own family. As Akina would later find out, what can be said about the dimensions beginning to warp together is that the Nana-gou, the original landmarks of Sakurashin-machi, large trees existing in both realms and thought to be Enyou's blessing... were anything but.
You see, the sakura trees (known as the Seven Pillars) around Sakurashin-machi protect it with a barrier, keeping the town not only peaceful, but safe for both demons AND yōkai. However, they are not, as revealed, sacred relics that exist solely so that the Hiizumi line, like Akina, can tune others. Not at all. In fact, the truth is that Enyou sent the Seven Pillars as linchpins of his hate, despair, and resentment to fuse the two dimensions... which is ultimately also the goal of his descendant, Hiizumi Enjin. He wishes for the dimensions to fuse, and will do anything to work toward this goal. He even goes so far as to (later in the manga) find the best A and S-class Yōkai Hunters, band them together, and get them to go after those in Sakurashin-machi. It benefits them mutually: Enjin will get the dimensions fused (for whatever reason he may want it, as this has yet to be revealed; Enjin is enigmatic at best...), and once the worlds of the yōkai and humans are together with the other race everywhere, the hunters will have many more yōkai to prey upon.
That, more or less, is Enjin's motivation. But if Enjin is a descent of Enyou and from the other side (let's call the yōkai world 'side B', okay?), how the heck did he end up in Sakurashin-machi, let alone our world? And WHY does he want to destroy the town? ... Ah, isn't THAT the question. And it has... an interesting (and horrifying) answer: he is incorporeal. What this means... is he is dead. But he is not like a Jiang Shi (living corpse), like Rin. Oh, no. Enjin, being a Hiizumi by blood, has far greater powers (and more master over them) than Akina... and god only knows how many lifetimes more he had to practice with them. Using these spiritual powers, Enjin possessed the body of Nanami Ao's older brother, Gin, while he was on side B. Which is all well and good, except that... Gin is a yōkai who had been trying to do just the opposite of Enjin. He wanted to prevent the worlds from fusing.
This is where everything begins to tie together. Akina, his grandfather (a great tuner in his own right who had to tune Hime's grandmother at one point much earlier in the series, thus why she isn't present and Hime is now mayor) and Gin decided they were going to find a way to stop the worlds from fusing. ... Unfortunately, Akina and Gin (as well as his little sister) could not have known that the Hiizumis on the other side, whom Gin expected to help him and bring back with him--he was confident he could use them to help him get back--did not go there voluntarily, as Enjin explains. As they were sacrificed, considered a meaningless branch clan, all of Enyou's descendants are likely as bitter as Enjin. And Gin appearing on the yōkai side B from side A... was the perfect opportunity.
So Enjin took over the Satori's body, and (supposedly) completely shoved out and severed his soul from it, much like a parasite becoming its host. Not a pretty thought, and it left an even more frightening scar over his shoulder and his chest, though pain seems a small price for his ultimate goal. After all, he doesn't plan to stay in that body...
... His real target is the body of Hiizumi Akina, which he openly states. With a final push of HIS powers; those of the great oyakume (if harnessed properly), and using the Seven Pillars... would completely merge and cross the dimensions on both sides. Of course, after this battle and the reveal, Enjin disappears. He'll later visit Ao, whom he mocking calls his little sister still, as he IS truly in her brother's body, where it is revealed Gin's soul... may still exist. Thus, Akina cannot use his tuning on Enjin--if he did, Ao's brother may be lost forever... and no one could bear that. Even if they know it MIGHT still be there... and even if Ao and Akina believe he will come back, it may just not be possible unless another body is given up to Enjin. ... Which is EXACTLY as he wants it, more or less. I'd even go as far as to say it'd been his plan all along...
[ Personality ] :
To describe him in one word is impossible, but if I had to, I would say "enigma". Why? Well... Enjin is mysterious. Everything from his past, to how he mostly became like he is, to 'who' he truly is... is unknown. All that one can say for SURE about him (and undoubtedly, he LIKES it this way) is that he is no longer among the living. Which is why he is in the body of Nanami Ao's older brother, Gin. The fact that he is willing to pretty much all but sever the soul of Gin so he can steal his body says a lot about his true nature: Enjin cares for no one but himself and his own goals. He's fueled by hate for the Hiizumi main line, and the lies told by them about his predecessor, Enyou. But whatever he may say, his true motivations; why he is attempting to cross the dimensions and destroy Sakurashin-machi... are known only to himself. He is a ruthless, powerful person, and he'll manipulate any possible angle he can to get what he wants accomplished, and to get the job done.
He doesn't care what happens even to his own relatives, and he loves to openly throw salt in any wound he can find in the residents of Sakurashin. Especially when it comes to poor, poor Ao, who is his biggest victim of all. He highly enjoys being her 'brother', and as is apparent, could care less what effect he might have on her and others emotionally and mentally... even physically. He's manhandled Ao twice, the second time to STEAL her own Satori power (more about that later). He has also done this to Kyōsuke's younger sister, Tōka, who is also an Oni of great power, but who must wear a shackle to control it. He doesn't discriminate on his victims.
He doesn't have many weaknesses. He's a cunning man--though calling him 'human' is a stretch by any standard. If he has a heart, or had a heart, it's long gone (both literally and figuratively, since... well, he's dead), along with any innocence he may have had. It died a long time ago with his body, or he never had one, I imagine. Because of this, he is also ruthless, cold, calculating, and concise. He doesn't care if he voices his plans, either: he's direct about what he wants, unless he can manipulate someone, in which case he'll be more than happy to keep talking, which seems to be one thing he does love to do. Taunting, and watching Akina and his friends be shocked by what he does is nothing short of amusing to Enjin. Of course, talk of his family can anger him easily, which makes it the one area he doesn't tolerate sarcasm or joking. He loathes the main family, and finds their sheer ignorance intolerable.
He's a bit like a snake and a fox all in one: a combination of guile and slippery cunning, ruthlessly stalking his prey and snapping them up, crushing them slowly, then sinking in his fangs to poison them... just before letting them go, barely alive, so he can watch them die slowly in amusement and thrill. He derives great pleasure from other's suffering (which he believes they likely deserve, anyway, and even if they don't, he couldn't care any less), and his capacity for violence and hate, loathing, and amusement at the most horrific things is positively astounding, but in the worst possible way. ... What is worse, possibly, is that this is all supplemented by the fact he has extreme power at his fingertips, so to speak. He'll do anything to further his plans. Anything. And he will never give up on them. That said, he also knows when to not pick a fight and run away. After all, he who fights and flees lives longer to pursue their goals.
[ Strengths/Weaknesses ] :
As I mentioned earlier, Enjin's body is not his own. While that may be true, don't expect to be ejecting him from the body of Ao's brother anytime soon. He quite likes the Satori power he has in it, after all. He can manipulate minds as well as read them, fight well in martial art and street terms, and can also tune and use the power of the Hiizumi line as Akina can with a much better understanding and mastery. His cunning and guile make him agile and quick to think on his feet. He is also a yōkai, which means he has better than average strength to a human, as well.
Of course, because of his personality, every once in awhile he doesn't know when to stop talking, and he isn't invulnerable: he can easily be taken by surprise or sheer brute strength mid-monologue. And he wears glasses, though whether it's for fashion or sight is hard to say. You won't find Enjin caring for anyone--even his own family, or kind. He seems to have a loathing for all life, or a disposition in which he doesn't care for it at all.
That said, what appears to be wolf or fox... or maybe even cat (?) ears, are, in actuality, antennae. That's right: that's what the power of Satori is--through the use of those antennae, he can read minds... and manipulate them. He also appears to be able to teleport/disappear and reappear at will, though this is more likely than not a form of manipulation of people's minds so it seems as if he's reappeared in another place. As Hime put it, "like a frame missing from a movie", as though you missed him move, just for a split second. Hime herself has near raptor-vision, so if SHE missed him moving, there must be something going on, be it teleportation or mind-manipulation.
Enjin can also create any illusion he wishes: he weaves them easily and undetectably. Considering his yōkai AND Hiizumi tuning powers (which he can combine at will), I think it'd just be best if I listed what he can do/has been shown to do thus far in the manga. ... It's a LONG list.
Strengths
• Tuning: The ability of the Hiizumi family line, Enjin can sever connections of a yōkai from the human world back to theirs, sending them back. It can also be damaging, as it is also able to be amassed like electricity or energy over his hands and arms, and can cause shocking or boost the strength and pain of his blows and punches, and possibly worse.
• Satellite: a form of Telekinesis, like Ao's, is probably something he can do--a mass, city-wide mind reading that can make one extremely tired afterward. After all, he IS in the body of her older brother, and probably is better at controlling the power.
• Mind Interference: Think of it as 'Reverse Satellite', more or less. He can cast this on the mind of an entire city with ease and, in the process, make one building or himself (or several people, even perhaps all of those within any space) unable to be thought of. As if it didn't exist... as if the mind and eye skates right over an area. He can even make it so people cannot leave buildings, enter buildings, and so on. Even so that an entire town (like those in Sakurashin-machi) don't think--and therefore never--leave their town.
• Mind Reading: On the short term, he can probably easily hear the thoughts of others, just like Ao. His mind cannot be read or heard, for one reason or another.
• Strength: As on the tin. Yōkai automatically are stronger than humans, therefore, it's a ratio of at least 2-to-1 with his own strength. He is also adept at fighting and a fairly quick person.
• Weapons: Enjin appears to be adept at the use of small knives, and carries one with him at all times. He is also fairly good at blocking even dual swords (as shown by his fight with Yae) with ONE little knife. Pretty slick, really.
• Illusions: He can make ANYTHING look like ANYTHING else, make it DO anything else. He can make a house disappear. He can make himself disappear. You name the illusion, he can probably create it.
• Recovery: This may be due to his illusion ability, but it appears yōkai, as default, recover quicker than humans. Add to this his tuning powers, and... well. It's a deadly combination at times, and others a life-saving one for Enjin himself.
• Jumping: As a yōkai, his abilities in all things are advanced to humans. He can jump farther and scale things with ease because of this. He can also jump from great heights and remain uninjured, as well.
Weaknesses
... This is much simpler.
• Typical Jerkass Badguy: He is prone to talking far too often and thus open (at times, but seems to recover quickly) for attacks. He is also over-confident and can be tricked. But fool me once, shame on you: most things will only work once on the ingenious Enjin.
• Megane: He wears glasses. Self-explanatory, though they will by no means cause his vision to lesson, if his fight with Yae in the latest chapters is any indication. Gin does NOT wear them, so why his vision is somewhat poor (if at all) is hard to say. All I can tell you is they're not sunglasses. Perhaps he's just far-sighted?
• Shifting: This probably won't apply to Vatheon, but his tuning powers, like Akina's, may cause him to slowly shift into the yōkai world unless he touches a human often, or a real object in the human side (AKA our world), which brings a Hiizumi back to this reality.
• Power Drain: This is both a weakness... and a power. Enjin's powers are drawn from Gin's body. Therefore, he can--and must--periodically drain power from any other yōkai to recharge. This also makes the one he grabs and drains using his 'ears' (which are really antennae) weaker, unless they're quickly taken from him. Even a short amount of time will allow him to be back to a full 'battery' of sorts.
[ Other Important Facts ] :
... DID I MENTION ENJIN HAS THIS HUGEASS SCAR ON HIM? Right. Oh, and he looks
like these images here, since I am lazy. Due to conflicting with the anime (which is terrible and not canon--I am taking him from entirely manga canon), his icons... might confuse you, uh. So! Since Ao's hair is teal-blue-silverish, so is her brother's. However, since Gin's eye color is unknown (presumably blue), and Enjin is possessing him, I figure I will go with his eyes being red for effect.
... And yes those are cat ears AND human ears on his head. No he does not possess a tail.
[ Sample ] :
Enjin stood up, slowly. The ‘ears’ on his head twitched slightly in dismay, and he looked at the white fur on his coat with disdain (it had better be salvageable, he’d thought, as he rather liked this coat) before quietly getting to his feet. He felt woozy, when he knew very well he shouldn’t-after all, he’d just recently visited ‘his’ little sister, right? He WAS her ‘big brother’ now, after all. Not only that, but she AND the little oni girl-Kishi Tōka, wasn’t it?-had so graciously (he thought) given him (read: he’d stolen) the energy he needed to use the Satori power in this body. There was a moment before he realized he was missing his glasses, and looked down, to find them greeting him from the stone floor.
“...” He was silent (for once) as he bent over, picking up his glasses. Mostly because he was too tired to try and read minds or cast anything right now when he shouldn’t have been, but also because he was at a slight loss for words in a situation such as this. When he got back up, Enjin cast a glance at his sopping wet coat once more, picking at his light, pale blue hair with a look of contempt before replacing the black glasses on his face where they belonged. ... Well, if he was going to figure anything out, he’d better drag himself forward and look around, right? Maybe this weak feeling was a side-effect of his new body. That would certainly answer more than a few questions, if it was the case. If not... well, he’d just have to keep good on his ittle promise to Ao about completely expelling the soul of her brother, if it was interfering with him using this body. ... Even if it was supposed to be completely gone already, of course.
“I’ll have to find another one here,” he mused to himself, in regard of finding a yōkai to use as a patsy for the energy he needed. As he did so, one of the nearby locals grabbed her mother, whispering something about a ‘man with doggie-ears!’ before the child was hurried away from him, the older woman keeping a concerned eye on Enjin, and the other on her child. Watching that occur, he couldn’t help but let a devious grin work its way onto his features. The child reminded him very much of little Ao, just without the so-called ‘ears’ she and he shared. They were really antennae, however, which he’d reminded people of before. Well, they had the same function, it just wasn’t that they were for just hearing. Ao... oh, how Enjin did love those yōkai-very, very much, in fact, despite what some would say about him. He just couldn’t help but want to use them for a better purpose, after all; how could anyone not use their convenient power to it’s full potential~? They ought to thank him for being so considerate, really.
After a moment, he began walking, boots clacking, and found himself casting a glance upwards. ... At first, he hadn’t noticed it, but the sky here... was strange. No, beyond strange; it was downright weird, even by his standards (and he was dead). He was quiet for a moment, and stopped walking when he looked down at his shadow... which was moving. ... Why? And when a large fish swam past the barrier, his frown, however slight, turned to disbelief, and then amusement, his expressions finally coming full-circle.
“Ahaha! It's the damn ocean?” He said, half in disbelief, half in amusement. “How about that! What an interesting place...”
It was certainly that. Another person nearby, this time a teenager, looked at him (and clearly a resident of this world, which Enjin was certain was neither the yōkai nor the human worlds; he’d know, he’d been to both), and said to a man nearby, “It’s another one of the saviors!” before he was hurried away by the man. Enjin was quiet for a moment, his expression blank, because you’d have to be an imbecile not to have heard this kid. Then, slowly, his smile widened to a toothy, lop-sided, fully blown grin, and he let out a long chortle of laughter that echoed inside the depths of the buildings, halls, and every corner of Vatheon. The laughter would stay there, too, even once he was long gone.
Imagine, someone who wanted to destroy both worlds... called a ‘savoir’. Now that was irony, and hilarious irony at that. He was going to enjoy this place...
Note: Enjin's goals/earlier history I... cannot establish as it's never touched on. Maybe later; if then I'll update this. :|b
