Every time the book describes Calcifer i get some kind of cognitive dissonance going on as my brain tries to shoehorn that description into how he looked in the movie =P

I think even though Sophie was in shock about being pissed at the witch of the waste, the part about her feeling/acting old is more intrinsic than that.

Oh, and i think Michael is just jaded, maybe with a little placid thrown in.

That looks a lot like the movie Calcifer, but not what the book was describing.

"But she was sidetracked a little by imagining a face in the flames. 'It would be a thin blue face,' she murmured, 'very long and thin, with a thin blue nose. But those curly green flames on top are most definitely your hair. [...] And those purple flames near the bottom make the mouth - you have savage teeth, my friend. You have two green tufts of flame for eyebrows....' Curiously enough, the only orange flames in the fire were under the green eyebrow flames, just like eyes, and they each had a purple glint in the middle that Sophie could almost imagine was looking at her, like the pupil of an eye."

I wonder if there's supposed to be something magical about going counter-clockwise (or anti-clockwise if you prefer)instead of clockwise.

Going widdershins has a long history in fairy tales & beyond, so there is something there.

Maybe Sophie shouldn't think that they'd "have to use extreme and violent magic to" get her out of the chair, when she's in the castle of a wizard with an evil reputation?

Heh. I thought it was a nice touch -- I could *feel* that comfort. But it's a good point that if everything she believes about Howl is true, extreme & violent magic is an option.

Re Michael, I have no opinions on the book version yet. The movie version seemed like a combination of jaded, placid, and befuddled to me. Accepting. As I guess everyone else in this land is; he knows he's in a fairy tale, he works for the Wizard!
