I think I've half talked myself out of going to Culinary School.
There's a few things that concern me and I'm not sure it's worth it. Firstly, the program I've gotten into is a certificate program - not a degree program. Everyone has to take the Culinary Program before they can get into the Baking & Pastry Arts program. I really only want to go to the second one, but I don't have much of a choice. Also, there's a chance I wouldn't even get into the Baking & Pastry Arts program. They only accept so many people, and not everyone gets in.
Culinary School is expensive. Especially if you do both programs. And then there are living expenses on top of that. Also, from the Chef/Cooking forums I've been on, people in this industry (even if some of the bigger cities and the fancier restaurants/resorts) don't make a heck of a lot of money.
So, I decided that I'm going to give myself to the end of November to really figure it out. I'm going to need extra money, regardless, so I started looking for a second job.
I already work full-time at a mid-size hotel. The General Manager (my friend Lisa or Bosslady, as I sometimes call her) left the hotel at the end of August. So we haven't had an actual manager for a while. I was pretty much the manager, without the pay or the title. So on the 8th, I asked the owner for a raise, which he gave me. Then I asked him to make me Assistant Manager. We've never had one of those, but I wasn't sure he would make me General Manager. And I'm not sure I want to be General Manager. Anyway, the owner asked me what my responsibilities would be. I'm sure I gave him a funny look. I told him whatever he wanted my responsibilities to be. He took a piece of paper and wrote some things down before giving it to, asking if that was okay. It was all things that I was already doing, except one. I told him it was fine.
After work, I went to a nearby Pizza Hut and checked on the application I put in. The Manager said that they would probably would be hiring in about two weeks. I thanked him and told him I'd check back then. He stopped me. "You work at the hotel up the road, right?" I told him yes. He asked me to come in for an interview the next day.
Guys, I don't know if you remember this post:
http://storywriter84.livejournal.com/56609.html but do you remember when they lost my debit card through the drive-thru? Well, I got a job there. I have orientation today. The lady that dropped my card still works there and everything. I'm only looking for around 12 hours. Although sitting here, typing this, the thought of a second job just makes me tired.
But, even if I don't go to school this fall, I need a new car. (Mine is dying). And I'll need some living room furniture for the house. So, I'll need the extra money regardless. I just kinda don't want to work 62+ hours a week.
Ugh.
Wish me luck.
