I think it is because it refers to a specific bed (definite article) rather than a bed in general. Which specific bed is implied, so saying 'fy ngwely' (or 'ei gwely hi') is unnecessary and probably a bit awkward sounding.
Similarly it is 'mynd i'r ysbyty', even though in British English it is 'go to hospital'.
