I love the serendipity of browsing libraries. The smell of the books, the exciting discovery of a literary treasure that was previously unknown, the quietness. Libraries have always seemed like Christmas to me, because all the books are free. Sure, you have to return the book, but still, it's pretty exciting to me ( Read more... )

While I agree that there's something to having a tangible book, and it's what I still prefer to have, you can't nock eBooks.
They're helpful for research and lookup (since you can often search for words and they often make use of bookparks and hyperlinks). And I see us quickly moving towards a culture of ownership for files. While cloud computing will rise, I think people are going to work harder at securing their data, rather than have some company sensoring or controlling their content, especially if that content is paid for.
Merchants love the subscription model. Consumers love the purchase model.

I'm not knocking e-books, I'm just saying they are unsatisfying. I have to use them all the time for work. Good for reference, fragile rare books and such. Still, I much prefer the paper book.

You can't deny that electronic book is widening the digital divide.

Well, I'm not knocking them entirely. Obviously they are good for some things (see above).

Many of my friends have offered to get me E/I things for reading. But I could never live without the smell of books. You crack them open, and it's like history. One of my daydreams is to run a bookstore. :)

The quietness. The cool air. The comforting smell. The prospect of a chair, in a corner, with no one else around.

I read in the tub. If I (rarely) drop a book in the tub, crinkly madness ensues. But if I drop an e-reader in the tub, expensive guilt and anger would happen. Who needs that?

I like this entry because I am a librarian. So I'm going to add you. Hope that's okay.
