I think your first paragraph really nails it. The way the Shoshana pouncing/Eden whispering thing is written is cute and exciting.

There’s the way Shoshana dances with her first and last every time they go out, always snags a seat beside her at dinner, has come to her show and cheered like there was no one else in the building. And Eden doesn’t let those thoughts linger but they pass through her mind slowly enough that her skin flushes and she bites her lip and feels a little guilty.
I loved this.
