Flynn rubbed his fingers across his forehead with a slight shake of his head. “You’re fucking kidding me, right?” He sighed and leaned forward to put his head in his hands. “Fucking hell.”
“It will clear right up with some strong antibiotics,” the doctor explained, annotating his script pad with the medication Flynn would need. “Have you had intercourse with anyone since the attack, Flynn? Of any sort. If you have, you will need to notify your partners so they can be treated too. Gonorrhoea can cause serious problems if left untreated, especially in women.”
Flynn shook his head tiredly. “No…” he confirmed. “I haven’t really been in the mood.”
The doctor nodded. “Understandable. Flynn, I can write you a referral for a sexual assault counsellor. I would highly recommend it given the circumstances,” the doctor coaxed. “I’d also like to order some tests to investigate that lethargy.”
“It’s nothing, doc. I just haven’t been sleeping. No tests. Just give me the pills and I’ll be out of your hair,” Flynn said, reaching for the script.
The doctor handed over the prescription. “Flynn, given your history, it’s better to be safe than sorry,” he insisted.
“Oh, I won’t be sorry. I’ve had enough injections and blood tests to last me a lifetime, doc. If you really want to help me, you can give me something to make me sleep.” Flynn folded the script over and placed it in the pocket of his shirt.
With a small sigh the doctor nodded. “Okay. I’ll give you a mild sedative but if this keeps up for a week or more, I want you to come back and see me. Besides the injuries and residual emotional distress from the attack, have you had any other symptoms besides lethargy? Headaches, nausea, malaise, changes in appetite?” he prompted.
“Besides being raped and getting the clap?” Flynn asked calmly, eyebrow raised. “You don’t think that would make me feel a little off? I was fine before this. I just want it to stop fucking hurting when I take a piss and to get a good night’s sleep.”
“I want to see you back in two weeks, Flynn. On the dot. By then, the symptoms should have cleared and you’ll be feeling back in top shape. Make sure you rest.” The doctor paused, watching his patient for a moment. “Are you sure you won’t consider the counselling? You’ve been sexually assaulted. Your mind might struggle to move on from that and return to normal.”
Flynn stood up and met the doctors eyes for a few moments. “I’ll consider it,” he agreed evenly. “Two weeks, doc. Don’t do anything I wouldn’t do,” he added and left the surgery with a slight smirk.
