Mr. James and Me!

Sep 14, 2009 13:07

I've been tweeting about him for a while, but I never thought that making a vlog about him would generate the response that it has so far. I'm talking about Mr. James, the new McDonalds Ad Campaign's secret weapon for generating buzz among foreigners and laughs among the Japanese.

Oh you know what? I know I commented on every post you did of this. But think of it this way. Somehow caucasians are cool with stereotyping and that shows tolerance. It's everyone else that freaks out over nothing!??

I don't know, does that make sense? How odd is my hypothesis Micaela?

I really dont want to be the one to say "look at how superior us white folk are, takin jokes like big strong men!"

but yeah, I also think, we dont have a history of being tortured or mistreated, and that maybe that has more to do with us not feeling victimized when a country pokes fun at us?

I think Blacks are cool with stereotyping if they think it's okay to call each others "niggas" but get offended when someone of another race does it to them. It's a funny double standard.

It's also usually a minority that gets offended by little things.

well the whole point of that black people saying Nigga to each other deal is more like a yeah you had us down but now we use the word so it has no meaning anymore.....cpet it still does >.> so fail...lol

but yeah Minorities need to stfu and stop whinning over every little thing unless someone is actualy doing something clearly racist poking fun at people is just whatever =/

OH MY GOOOOOOOOOOOOD. IT'S FUCKING ME. BUT 20 YEARS OLDER.

....

Anyways... I seriously almost died laughing! Best thing ever, for as I put so... eloquently above, I AM Mr. James... for now. I think it's fair game really... my boss is Chinese. It's cool for me to make fun of his english (Jared. Big Order, Very Stress!), and in return, it's fair game for him to make fun of my inability to read Chinese characters. Or understand half the conversation around me.

Anyways, I'm rambling. I'd enjoy to discuss this more if you want sometime though!

Maybe it's because of the length, but I thought the commercial was actually pretty boring. Like the initial concept of "bad gaijin Japanese" is a little funny, but then it's another 1:45 of beating the joke to death. If Japan thinks this is hilarious, I think it speaks volumes of their culture. It really isn't too far off of the 80s "me so solly" jokes.

Whatever works though. I think the only group that might offended by this would be people who actually look like this dude and are studying Japanese, which may be few and far between.

It's easy to find something offensive when there may be a shred of validity to the claim, especially so when it's a generalization of an entire group of people. It's true that people are, no matter how you decide to categorize them, varied, but there are certain aspects that are universal to nearly everyone, such as being uncomfortably awkward in an unfamiliar culture ( ... )
