Matsumoto RangikuShihouin YoruichiUrahara KisukeUlquiorraZaera-Polo Matsumoto Rangiku
Lieutenant, Creeping Limit
Matsumoto Rangiku was an orphan since the day she was born, unwanted and alone from her first breath. She was dropped on the doorstep of a Chi-1 orphanage at only a few hours old, where they took her in and gave her a name. She never knew who her parents were, nor did she really want to know. Even at a young age, she held no idealistic visions of what her life could’ve been like; there was only harsh reality, manifested all around her on the streets of Chi-1.
For years she was shuffled from home to home -- the poor people of Chi-1 had little use for orphans, but Rangiku was a pretty little girl, with long blonde hair and bright blue eyes, a rarity among the strong Japanese inheritance of her planet. So they would take her in, only to find Rangiku was precocious and fiercely independent, unwilling to take the least bit of crap from anyone. She belonged to no one, only herself. Her nonexistent parents had made that abundantly clear.
Until the day she met Ichimaru Gin. She had been sent back to the orphanage again, the cycle repeating itself once more. Rangiku decided to break it, running away at the first opportunity she got, to take her chances on the streets. She was resourceful and quick, stealing food and playing on her exceptional looks for bits and pieces of whatever they would give her.
But she wasn’t resourceful enough for Chi-1, and hunger overtook her quickly. A tenacious child laying large round eyes on passersby attracted some attention; a near-dead orphan lying in the street attracted none.
She remembers the first time they met impossibly well, though whether it’s from a memory or a dream -- or both -- she can’t decide. He smiled down at her, his brilliant silver hair streaked with dirt, and held out an apple. A smile and an apple, just for her.
It was just the two of them after that. Despite his reputation, Rangiku learned to trust Gin in a way she’d never trusted anyone before, and she gained her first friend, her first companion. Her first love.
Until the day Ichimaru Gin left. She wanted to refuse to say he’d left her, but Rangiku wasn’t naïve. He disappeared to search for a Confederation recruitment officer, and he hadn’t said a single word. Not even a smile. She’d waited weeks, months, years for him to return -- to her, she kept reminding herself, but she still wasn’t naïve, no matter how much she longed to be. He wasn’t coming back.
She would have to be the independent girl she used to be.
The next day, only a week before her eighteenth birthday, she was sneaking onto a ship bound for Alpha-1, to find Gotei Enterprises’ Headquarters and put in her application.
She only looked back sometimes.
Shihouin Yoruichi
Captain, Rubicon
The daughter of a prestigious and affluent family, Shihouin Yoruichi was raised in an environment of political intrigue, centered on Beta-3…among other things. A noble, well known before she was even five, Yoruichi was taught the etiquette of a young lady, the clever deceit of the flighty world of elected officials, and the art of being much, much better than everyone else.
This last one she endorsed with mild amusement, growing up to believe in herself as much as necessary, and no more. Her mother never paid too much attention to her, no more than, say, a necessary acquaintance: someone she had to acknowledge, and therefore did. Yoruichi’s father doted on her though not for love of her. Perceiving in her the wry and sharp mind of a potentially superior player in his many back-stabbing games, he gave her almost anything she wanted, provided a prime education for her. Of course she could only ever accept things from him. No one else was allowed near his “precious star” as he called her. She learned this quickly enough when he nearly choked a classmate of hers for stopping by to ask if she would like to train with him. It didn’t take a genius to understand a punishment when she was given one; after releasing her classmate, he turned his inane possessive anger on her. She wasn’t afraid even though she would carry those scars for the rest of her life.
Her father felt by default of age and a patriarchal way of thinking, that he was always much more powerful, untouchably so, than everyone around him, including Yoruichi.
That was his prime mistake, of course. By watching the errors and proper plays of the people around her, she learned useful things they might have preferred she not know. How to hack money out of the central family reserve was one such thing. At the age of 19 she was no better than a bored, precocious child and did something that seemed like a good idea at the time: stole an obscene amount of funds and flew the hell off of Beta-3. In the next decade or so she would meet many people in between eluding her father’s secret mobile corps-whom she had once had jurisdiction over at the shocking age of 16-and other less straightforward people on her trail-people her father had hired off the black market, no doubt. At some point she took consideration and then application of the occupation of bounty hunter. It was a far more interesting way to earn money, honestly…well, more or less.
On one of her many different excursions, Yoruichi ran into one, Urahara Kisuke. An eccentric and showy character of well-smoothed charm and double-motives, as well as a touch of what Yoruichi considered polite insanity, Kisuke was the kind of person who amused her. The fact that his ship provided any and all parts for any given anything she might want-even something that hadn’t really been invented yet-was helpful as well. Ever a curious person, Yoruichi ended up relying solely on Kisuke for things for her ship, the Rubicon-named for a limit that when broken leaves no possibility of return or change of mind, forcing one to take the path right in front of him or her. As such he became one of her regular acquaintances, hooking her up with all sorts of technology, those legal and not.
Now 29, Yoruichi is flying Rubicon solo, as it is a smaller ship…the one she stole when she first left home. She goes where she pleases, takes up warrants for ‘wanted’ peoples if the price is right, and carries with her the thorough knowledge of how to kick asses.
Yes, plural…she finds it a useful talent.
Urahara Kisuke
Entreprenuer, Benihime
Born to a family of mechanics, Urahara Kisuke spent every waking minute fixing things, running tests, and experimenting. Having parents who were the head mechanics for the Gotei Enterprise was not ideal for the boy, since he never left the main colony and never traveled. Around the age of 8, Kisuke was bored. He knew all the makes and models of ships and how their systems worked, to the point where he could fix some of the lesser important ships on his own.
During a usual inspection by the Confederation, Kisuke saw his window of opportunity. He snuck onto the ship, and while completely fascinated by all the new technology and equipment around him, he was thousands of miles in deep space before he knew it. Shortly afterwards, he was discovered and was threatened to be taken back, but that definitely was not what he had in mind. Although a young boy, he managed to impress the officers of his talent and vast knowledge of the technology and possible improvements that could be made.
Not ones to pass up possible brilliance, the Confederation immediately sent Kisuke to the Intergalactic Law Enforcement Facility, where Kisuke’s curiosity and thirst for knowledge allowed him to pass through the training quicker than anyone had ever seen at the time. After graduating, at a tender age of 16, Kisuke worked in various techological labs conducting research in hopes to improve weapon systems and battle configurations for ships.
As everything seemed to be going so well for him, it went spiraling downward quickly. During one of his required patrols of the universe, a ship deemed to be suspicious was caught, and the feds, not lightly taking the possibility of trouble, quickly exterminated it. As the reports came in within the next hour upon inspection, no evidence was found of suspicious activity or cargo. Glancing through the crew register, Kisuke stopped at two names he knew so well - his parents. He became sick and disgusted at himself as well as the Confederation, having his eyes opened to the fact that they would stop at nothing if any possible threat was visble.
Upon this enlightening experience, he left the Confederation after being named one of the most promising officers, and joined Gotei Enterprises. He worked there for a number of years, quickly becoming popular for his quirky, happy-go-lucky attitude and quick wit. But then he mysteriously dissapeared, shrinking back into the depths of virtual obscurity.
Only a handful know his whereabouts, and when they come across him, they are never dissapointed with all the artifacts Kisuke has to offer, ranging from rubbish uncovered from wrecks to expensive equipment stolen from the Confederation.
Ulquiorra
Captain of the Los Nochas
There are few things Ulquiorra deems worthy enough to remember about his past and there are even fewer things that have burned themselves into his existence. Growing up on Alpha-5 was one of those things. The constant cold and need for vigilance taught him well of his own strength and skill. He also found a certain kinship with the cold dark blizzards that would sneak in on you and steal the life of the unwary. The cold and the dark were weapons to be used and all who feared either were simply trash.
Leaving Alpha-5 for the confederation was a simple matter for Ulquiorra. The confederation represented the one thing that he respected - power. Climbing through the ranks of the feds was also an easy task, his photographic memory allowed him to remember anything that had seen once and his unusual strength and speed gave him an advantage over the ‘common’ man.
The hollow program became him goal the moment he caught wind of it. The ability to move quietly through space, bringing his own sort of justice and skill to the playing field was one that he relished. He had just been accepted and fought his way to be the captain of a special rank ‘Espada’ rank on the ship Las Noches, when he meet the second most important thing in his life.
Aizen Sousuke.
A man of true vision and power, it did not take Ulquiorra long to dedicate both his life and his crew (for their opinion did not matter) to the whim and will of the one man in the universe who he deemed worthy of his highest regard.
Zaera-Polo
Espada-ranked Hollow, Las Noches
Early on in life, there were a few things Zaera-Polo came to terms with. First; that he was quite a great deal smarter than everyone else. Second; that he would someday be in a position to assert that belief as subtly and cantankerously as possible. The life of a munitions engineer's child seemed to support him into venues of the destructive ilk. Science and engineering became devotion. As he soon surpassed his father's talents as both a scientist and obtuse thinker, the potential he was destined seemed limitless. For the most part everyone chose to ignore his accomplishments, and instead wallow in the wake of a hefty Federation paycheck. In favor of his goals was his utter lacking of compassion or understanding, merely a trait he was born without, lending him a very apathetic set of morals. Most precarious of his interfamilial ties, however, remains that of his older brother, Ilforte Grantz who did everything in his power to outperform his vastly more gifted sibling. By some strange alchemy he achieved it (at least in illusion.) Zaera, not terribly concerned with such novelties as "parental approval" managed to ignore him with little difficulty. Intermingled between his studies and recitals, Zaera was trained as a sharpshooter and fencer. Ilforte remained the faster shot, true, but Zaera was precise and analytical.
As a result he always won.
Time proceeded as would any other biological cycle. Rising, falling, beginnings and ends. He merely took steps to further himself mentally.
When the time came to assume his place amongst the Federation Research Division, however, he was flatly refused due to "budget cuts." within the organization This marked the first instance that Zaera-Polo dealt with true loss. He went through a very brief, very comprehensive depression. Ilforte, accepting his brother's failure with great fervor, joined the ranks of the Federation army. Crestfallen, Zaera-Polo saw nothing more to do with his life and accepted the same fate as a rank and file. In a rather unlikely turnabout, the fuchsia haired scientist retooled his goals, and settled on becoming the best officer he could. Two years service brought about the transfer to the Hollow forces. Six brought the offer to join the freshly established Espada. He was handpicked to be among the ten most gifted, diverse and unique officers the Federation had to offer.
Of course he accepted.
If anything just to piss off Ilforte, and achieve that long sought seat of power. He has since resumed his studies and inventions, and has as of late shown surprising ability in both deception and linguistics. Quite worthy of mention, the scuffle that he and his fellow Grantz shared that marked the end of their relationship. His years as a soldier sharpened his already prodigious skill sets, but not the sensation of facade about him. That he could never shake.
