Simply reading this makes me feel self-conscious. How is it that the presence of someone can cause that reaction within ourselves? What are we trying to prove and to whom? Misery loves company and I often feel that way when it comes to my relationships. I'd say it's a bullshit excuse that transforms into a self-fulfilling prophecy; not just either or.
