Topic of today's lj will be hard to write without crossing the politically in-correct line. I just finished reading more articles on this entire Danish cartoon fiasco that seems to be ripping the world apart. Every time I finish reading the latest developments I am left feeling frustrated and upset. Like honestly I just don't care anymore. I ( Read more... )

The whole issue highlights the point that radical Islam's blatant racism needs to be recognized, dealt with and on such terms that takes into account the severity of the threat. Cut trade to Iran, for starters. Outlaw clerical preaching in Canada by imams who have been trained in radical universities...

Ugh, I totally disagree

We should boycott Iran because they're protesting? because a newspaper threatens to publish offensive cartoons? It would make us grotesque hypocrites. Muslims are lining up to boycott all things Danish.

We should sanction Iran because of their nuclear activities, but what some segments of society do shouldnt invite punishment of the entire society. Israel doesnt seek to retaliate against countries who have Neo-Nazi / Anti-Semitic rallies. The protesters do not represent Iran or Iranians.

Iranians certainly do not represent radical Islam either. It is easy to confuse the leadership with the nation, but clerics run the country, but would not be able to without their electoral manipulations.

Fucking hypocrites!!! On the other hand I've also read that it is small groups that are actually doing alot of the bad stuff. There have been other peaceful protests that didn't end in gun violence and gernades. Kinda like the idiots (anarchists?) who blow shit up at G8 summits and make the rest of the protestors look bad.

Regardless, this whole situation is wwwaaayyyy outta control and I think any reasonable person can see that.

Yeah the whole thing is so overblown... to us. However, I can see WHY they are upset, as it's simply against their religion. But have we ever understood that entire part of the world... or will we ever?

Besides, while we live in a free country and satirical caricatures are fair game, would we be laughing if an islam newspaper printed a cartoon of say Adolf Hitler, a big grin on his face, beside a gas chamber with Europe underneath? Some things are in bad taste, this is one of them, but the reaction is suprising.

Well, the Iranians are trying to prove us hypocrites, but they'll be wrong. They think we will respond the same way -- demonstrations, freaking out. They're trying to say 'you have your hot button issue, we have ours'

We wont (or shouldnt) have counter-demonstrations to denounce the Iranians, because as offensive as we might think these provocative cartoons might be, the point is supposed to be about freedom of expression. We have to show that we tolerate what we dont like, to prove that Muslims should have too.
