I don't really know that much about politics tbh, it's boring! But I know that a lot of people are disappointed that he was voted, as they think the fact that he is black and that that's a chance to create a historic election was the main reason why people have voted for him. I saw one comment earlier "hope you enjoy your American idol president" lol.
If anything though it at least shows a lot of Americans are maybe being more open minded to change and diversity/multiculturalism? That will help relations with a lot of countries.
So yes, I'm wondering what he will do for America and for the rest of us! It's like a fresh start, but I'm pretty sure they said that when Bush was elected haha.
I was thinking the same thing about Obama, I can honestly say all through the election malarky I haven't once thought of him as 'the black guy'. The fact that everyone is so crazy about him being the first black president shows just how much race is still an issue.
The pigmentation of Barack's skin has nothing to do with his leadership qualities, but it's still interesting to remark on the fact that he's the first American president who isn't white. Beyond that, I personally put no stock in to it, because I don't give a shit about race in the first place. Many people who consider race more significant, however, see it as a bound forward for racial equality.
It is that much of a big deal, because in the past that has been a factor that would have made his, or any other black man's presidency completely unrealistic. The fact that we're over that is a massive deal! It being a massive deal is a serious step to it actually not being a big deal one day, if you get me.
Seconded! I personally don't see massive differences in Obama and McCain as leaders, but the fact that America has finally gotten over the idea of Nazi ideals to the extent that a majority can vote a black man their superior is monumental. We still live in a vastly racist world, and this was a landmark effort in overcoming that.
The fact that he was essentially running against a woman makes the victory bittersweet to me, but sarah p didn't present herself in the most appealing light during campaigning. A female president would be equally big a deal, because the fact is however open-minded you and I may be, the majority still are not. We presumably have our weaknesses too. Who would you trust to lead you? At what point is someone too old/too young/too mentally ill/too physically disabled/too uneducated/too educated/too black/too white? It's interesting more socio-culturally than politically, but it has tremendous impact politically too.
On the other hand, cheese party sounds amazing! What an awesome idea! Not so vegan-friendly, but I certainly want to steal a variant on this theme! Brilliant idea! What cheese are you taking? Do you surprise each other with cheeses or do you plan in advance so you know that everyone will bring something different?
it was a rousing sucess! we did plan it in advance lest we have too many repetition of cheeses!
i bought some good stilton and mature gruyre there was goat cheese, port salut, two types of camenbert, some extra mature cheddar, various types of chutney and pates, a runny ripe brie, huge bunch of grapes and an assortment of cheese crackers!
truly blinding evening!
we should do something similar without any cows' help! what do you suggest?
that does indeed sound like a banquet fit for many a king and queen! you did well in your socio-gastronomical endeavours! though i am saddened by the lack of ANY of my beloved cheeses: parmesan (NUMBER ONE!!), buffalo mozzarella, wensleydale, or smoked cheese of some kind! saddening. i think you need a rematch! Or perhaps those are more summer cheeses?
i suppose we could do a vegan cheese sampling session? rating them on a scale of batshit intolerable to adequately edible? i've not really tried any ever but i hear frightening things...
alternatively a cake/biscuit/fine breads/international cuisine night could work? desserts? i'm frightened! hold me!
i have nay money for auchi and i know not when it is! xxx
haha! i did have some parmesan in the fridge but didn't bring to the table, as there were many more 'table' cheeses already present XD i did think of some smoked and mozz balls but yes, as you say i see them more as summery cheeses, same goes for feta really - and i couldn't be arsed to cook/grill any halloumi and kirby who was supposed to bring the sweet wensleydale+fruit variations pulled out due to filming... sob!
side bar - ohmydays, feta with cubes of watermelon? i could eat it for the rest of my life.
fine breads sounds good! im getting quite confident with baking breads now! my new thing is sweet savoury breads! like, chocolate bread or cinnamon bread sweetened with dates and coffee bread with walnut.
mmm... bread... sometimes it amazes me that some random egyptian decided, "hmm, lets make a goo with this ground up grass seeds and let it sit in the sun" XD what were they thinking? haha! whoever you are, i thank thee.
auchi is this coming fri-sun! poop for lack of finances, but i hope to see you soooooon! x
