I haven't seen Iron Man but I'm curious what offended you about it. His traditional characterization as "couragous, loveable asshole, dipsomaniacal womanizing defense contractor who battles the yellow peril," offers so many potential avenues of offense that I can't make an educated guess as to what angle(s) bugged you.

you know, for me it was two things: 1) the random evil/not-too-bright brown people in the caves speaking bad arabic; 2)the treatment of his attitude towards women (he is excused. because he is smart?)
now, there are many many movies with random evil brown people in it, but this one seemed so much more of a caricature than normal.

No, no, this is America. He is excused because he's rich! Hoo heh!

I guess I was just glad that in the end he didn't get the girl because she told him to shove it after ignoring her.

Bad arabic. Man...you'd figure they could get actors who were fluent...it's not like they didn't spend millions on the CG.

really? offensive? Ironman? I guess I thought it was just somewhat decadent fun. I thought the point of it was that the main character is an offensive bastard who nonetheless learns that he's the root of all evil and determines to fix it. I am also curious what you found offensive about it. Does I gots my blinders on agains ( ... )

Read the Anthony Lane review of Sex and the City in The New Yorker.

That was a really entertaining review, thanks. I especially loved the comparison to hobbits. :)
