Based on your personal experiences, what are your ideas about math?

Math is hard and horrifying. It is the only thing that I can't do with confidence and that's probably why I hate it the most. There is only one correct answer and that's not how the world should work!

Haha, I figured I would get a lot of answers like this. Thank you for answering!! My teacher today asked how we felt about math and everyone was just like "um, why do you think I'm at art school."

ALSO, recently you posted Anthony Bourdain's smashed potatoes recipe and I have this memory of you really like mashed potatoes a lot so I figured you knew what you were talking about. I made them last night and had them for both lunch and dinner today, which means I've eaten a cup of heavy cream and half a stick of butter in 12 hours, but . . . sooooooo good.

Yes! I'm glad you made them. That is so awesome. I seriously wish that I had them around all of the time. Ps- HAI.

I think the idea of algorithms is cool. I was never good at math until college. I had this great teacher who explained how everything worked, instead of telling us how to memorize the procedure to get the answer. And then it made sense to me, and that was the first time I ever got straight As in math. It was nice to finally know I could do it, so I guess now I think math is okay, but it's not something I would want to learn more about, and for most of my life, it was my most dreaded subject in school.

And after seeing your above comment, I think you need to try curry mashed potatoes and lime cilantro mashed potatoes, I make them with soy milk and a butter substitute, but I'm sure they would be delicious with cream too (I'm allergic so I wouldn't know...) anyway I can send recipes if you'd like them.

Thank you for answering! Almost everyone I ask seems scarred by grade school math classes - poor math.
Both your potato recipes sound awesome, I'd love to try them! I have some leftover potatoes even.

I had the recipes bookmarked but the links aren't working, so for curry I pretty much use curry powder, garlic and onion, and salt and pepper. I usually use about 5 larger potatoes and 1 cup of soy milk, I don't measure anything else. For the lime potatoes, this isn't my recipe, mine was a vegan one with tofu cream cheese and stuff, I think I have it written down somewhere.

I like math. It's satisfying when you understand it, but scary when you don't. I wish that people were told that math is easy, because when you convince yourself that it is easy it becomes less daunting.

Hi Becky! Thanks for answering my math question :)
I was one of the few people in my class who said they liked math. I think much of it can depend on math teachers you had early on! I always found math almost calming, because there's one right answer and you usually know if you're wrong - less subjective than writing a paper or article or something.

I really like math and I am pretty good at it. I just wish my AP stats teacher wasn't such a dick, forcing me to drop out because I had a hard time keeping up and he refused to help me out. also I have forgotten slightly more than basic math since I haven't done it in forever.

i think math is like life... you apply a formula to a problem
i often find myself using the guess and check method we learned in math class
but because of my disbelief in numbers, myself and math make for some friction.
