If you're into the creationism vs. evolution debate, here's an article that I found pretty interesting. I don't think there's necessarily a contradiction between the two sides. I don't understand why proponents of the creationism line are so adamant about forcing schools to teach "intelligent design". There is absolutely no hard science behind ( Read more... )

Thanks, Spencer. Has Ali talked to you about a Seattle trip? Because I'd love to do that with you and everyone again.

I guess strictly speaking, there's no "hard evidence" behind evolution either. At least, in the sense that there's nothing that explicitly points to it as being true (likewise for Intelligent Design). What I see is a bunch of knowledge we have about the natural world, and two opposing worldviews with different presuppositions that affect the way that knowledge is processed.
I don't know how I feel about I.D. being taught, because frankly I don't see how it can be taught. Beyond a passing mention, perhaps. Evolution, to a great extent, is the best way to understand the natural world and all its intricacies. Although it has its flaws and gaps in logic, as of now its the best way we have to encompass all of biological science. I.D. is more about pointing out the philosophical and metaphyiscal flaws in the naturalistic worldview that evolution presupposes.
In any case, reading "The Case for a Creator" by Lee Strobel is a good intro for anyone trying to look more into the actual arguments for I.D. as a theory.

I never took biology, so I have to concede that you're far more well versed with the theory of evolution than I am. However, I take issue with your first two lines. The "explicitly" part is what keeps the whole thing together in a logical sense, but yet, there's plenty of evidence that supports evolution out there. If you take out the "hard" part of my "hard evidence" statement and try to make the same argument you're doing now, I think it causes your argument to be a flawed one. Although I don't know the specifics of evolution as well as a biology professor, for example, I believe in the soundness of the scientific method. Therefore, I trust in the theory ( ... )

found the actual website for that book, it has some good overview stuff. if you click on the "read the latest evidence for yourself" link on the top left of the home page it gives good summaries of the different branches of science that are explored in the book.
