[Not fic] Just a few words to think on...

Aug 27, 2013 14:40

I saw something today in the VF fandom that made me want to cry. It wasn't on the YA or Sion community, but on another fan site, directed at specific fans. I feel the need the post this publicly on the chance that the person who wrote it will read this, and perhaps think before posting something like that again ( Read more... )

Yes, exactly. To me, the best way to explore canon is to change an aspect and figure out what would happen. Because then you really have to push your understanding of the characters and their dynamic, and you have to communicate that to the reader. Then everyone starts thinking.

I'd love to read the fic you're writing. :)

I wonder what would cause that commenter to react so violently to an author’s transformative work. It saddens me as well that someone could feel so threatened by an exploration of gender identity that they would attack in such a hurtful manner. I can only hope that your message reaches that person, and that they realize they have lashed out irrationally at innocent people, people who have a right to choose to be entertained however they see fit without being vilified, or having to justify their choices. There are genres of fan fiction that I don’t read as a matter of personal preference, but I would never consider ridiculing those who like them. As a discerning adult, I understand that the world is rich with a diversity of experiences, and it isn’t humanly possible to embrace them all - not that I don’t frequently try. ;) I only hope that that abusive commenter someday gains some maturity, and with it perspective, so that in future they don’t indiscriminately hurt people around them. Thank you, Sunflower, for stating what really ( ... )

I agree - yes thank you Sunflower for this post and for your eloquent dissertation.

I always try to encourage fanfiction writers and artists in their creativity and if there is something I don't like, I don't read it or if I do read it I just don't comment. There are too many messed up things in the world and our fandoms give us an out to just take some time and enjoy them instead of having to do with RL imposing on us. It always amazes me that people can be so rude and hateful when they find something they don't like.

Creativity in any form should be encouraged not killed.
