Almost done!

I've successfully  copleted portfolio review and senior show.  All that really remains is a quiz in Special Effects and however many extra credit tutorials that I can manage to get done before then.  And fixing capstone; Leah Managed to render it all without the eyes so we need to redo that ( Read more... )

A major thing about art careers that a lot of people don't realize is how deeply fluid they are, or can be. A lot of people who aren't in the field look at these titles like animation and graphic design and think they're all these separate things, but as I've come to understand it all feeds the same kind of output for the artist. Sure, a lot of graphic and digital design stuff have a wealth of shitty jobs, but you should be able to really just flex and move however you need to in order to do what you really want. Graphic design is somewhat supplementary to production. Of course, having your name known or being associated with an animation firm is helpful, but that is something that helps with that flexibility. It's very easy to look at this sort of movement with the career field as being unstable in contrast to a more conventional career, and maybe in that respect it is. However, the strength lies in your "movable talent". You do have to stay on your toes, yes, but that's a part of really being in an art field. It keeps it ( ... )

I do understand that I may be getting a job that is not going to be 3D modeling and animation all the time or even occasionally. I get it. What was really bugging me I suppose was that he seemed to take on the attitude that those sort of jobs are harder to get so I should just focus on other things. I understand that I'm not really in a position to turn down a job if it were offered to me.

But I also understand that my as of now, my hand skills SUCK. Maybe I'm being hard on my self, but I know that my drawing skills are really nothing to brag about. Hence why i'm going to GMU part time to work on that once i move down. So I doubt I'd get hired for a graphic design job anyway.

And I'm annoyed because Dad's just really pushy and seems to ramble on about things that raise my blood pressure with no particular aim.

Yeah, your dad seems to be fairly rigid on the subject. These things evolve he needs to understand.

Do you have a drawing tablet? Suprisingly I found my drawing (especially sketching and penciling type stuff) skills improve when I started using my tablet (Alias Sketchbook for the win).

Also, I think GMU has a really good drawing department. Although I'm kinda biased as i'm a FAB (Fine Arts Building) rat and I'm a friend of Walter Kravitz , the head of the drawing dept. That aside, we do have some fairly decent profs and the curriculum is set up fairly well (although it is fairly open ended). A TA i had in painting 2 is teaching drawing 1 this semester and I've been sorta crash-TAing in her class. She's a pretty decent prof, although right name her last name eludes me- her first name is Clarita; I'll find out if she's teaching drawing again because I would recommend her if you're going to take some drawing classes at GMU. Also I'm kinda excited that you're considering taking these classes at GMU because I really do spend most ( ... )

Yes I do have a drawing tablet, but unfortunately I got it right after I'd finished the courses that were focused primarily on hand skills.

I had a pretty good drawing instructor, the only problem was the administration didn't like him so we didn't get any models for our life drawing class. Photographic reference is all fine and good, but it's difficult to really learn to draw life when you don't have it in front of you. Hence why I am looking forward to going to GMU where the cirriculum comes before the politics. Or at least they value it enough to set personal differences aside.

I will tell your dad to be a mechanic for you, well maybe not cause I have seen his understanding of how cars work in the real world and it scares me. Its engineers like that, that put the heater core on my taurus such that the ENTIRE FUCKING DASH had to be removed down to the firewall to acess it. side tangent there. you already know my position in reference to your goals and desires. see you soon.
