This will get long and rambly, probably, so I'll stick it under a cut.

I can't understand people who can't understand that others don't do some things because they are unable, not because they don't too. Surely they must understand if you have a problem with your eyesight then driving car would being putting yourself and everyone else at risk.

I'm going to ask what is probably a silly question, since you've undoubtedly considered the option, but don't you have a local bus service with a bus stop not too far from your children's school? I understand that school buses don't cover all the routes as I've seen that happen here in Bilbao and parents often have to use public transport.

Have you tried to talking to the children's teachers about the transport problem maybe they could arrange for the school bus to have pickup point within 10 mins walk of where you live or something.

I'm probably talking out of the back of my head with the above, it just occurred to me. I sincerely hope you can work something out so your children can continue attending their school.

That's just it, J: There isn't a "Local bus system." There is a transit system that works Monday through Friday 8-6 or something. You have to call 24 hours ahead (or 1 business day ahead,at least) and then it's $2 per way. If you call that day, it's $5 per way, and not guaranteed to have a seat. There is a new line that goes down one of our main drags, but it wouldn't be enough to get them there.

And when I say the school doesn't bus, I mean, "I'm sorry, dear parent. We understand your issue, but we have no way of dealing with it, because we don't provide transportation in any way, shape or form."

So, yeah, we considered all those things.
Thanks for your comment.

That's very bad. I understand the transit system is like a kind of private bus system, then. Confess I didn't quite understand what it was.

How strange that a private school doesn't have a school bus, since I'm sure it would be handy for a lot of parents, after all you're paying for the education for starters. Is there any chance of proposing the provision of a school bus at a parents' meeting?

Is the school too far for the kids to cycle too, as well? Just a thought that occurred right now. I don't know how safe your roads are so maybe it isn't very practical either; and I'm sure you've considered all the options anyway short of changing house, which is probably just as impractical as all my other suggestions.

I just feel school tutoring is more efficient than home schooling in terms of socialization and less pressure for the parent.

Would that I could help you practically.

We're not actually paying for the school. It's one of those strange animals called "charter schools." It's under the guise of the school system, but exempt from some things. Like buses. So, there's that. I'm not sure they'd be going there if it was paid. They might, though. That's what my family did.

As to bikes, neither has one, nor knows how to ride. It's a possibility for later years, but we'd have to see. It's a 2-mile trip one way, so that'd be a bit of a ride for them. It's nearly completely across town.

I understand your problem and your feelings about it. Most of us hate to have to rely on other people ( ... )
