So, I just came home to see a OMG YOU HAVE A FAILING HARDDRIVE message on my computer. It's running just fine at the moment, so clearly I'm not turning it off as suggested, but OMG WHAT DO I DO? I am abroad, away from my warranty! WHAT WILL I DO IF MY COMPUTER DIES?! Panic, panic!

SUGGESTION: It sounds like you have a virus. Disconnect the computer from the internet and take a scrub brush to the harddrive. Virus scan, malware, ad-aware, spybot, THE WORKS. Then defrag.

(My little netbook just had this happen recently, so I feel your pain. *HUGS*)

I was thinking that, but I've run norton like three times since and it looks like everything's fine? And my computer has been weird lately? I don't knooow. D: D: D:

Also, what would this even achieve if it was a virus?! HONESTLY, HACKERS.

Upload everything critical into google docs if you have a google account - or make one! I lost a harddrive a couple years ago and only use google docs since. I hope it survives, though!

Do you have, or can you get, an external harddrive? That way you can at least back up everything that is on your laptop just in case, before you start messing with it.

What sort of message is it? Is it a Windows message?

I don't, and they're so expensive here (like, 99 euros.) If I buy that and need to get a netbook or something I'll be totally tapped, so I'm hesitant.

It *looked* like a windows message to me, and it like, wanted me to shut down the computer but I was like, well, frak that, it's still running right now so I'll keep it going as long as I can. A lot of people have said it might be a virus, but I keep running my scans and nothing's showing up.

I appreciate this. *hugs*

I met a girl today from Holland and she was from Friesland! I immediately thought of you.

Some stuff for windows support. What kind of computer do you have?

http://support.microsoft.com/default.asp.
there is supposed to be a support by location option for overseas

Specifically for viruses affecting windows
http://safety.live.com.

Back up everything you can
