If something illegal is done to one of our guests we'll call the police, but within the bounds of practicality and safety, try to get the situation as far from the house as possible. I have a very strong distrust of the police and don't want them in my house. Every situation is different and what we require is that at our house, we be allowed to make the decision about whether to call. As previously stated, immediately life-threatening situations are another matter entirely.
I hope it's clear how this could be problematic. I share your distrust of police in general but if something occurs that is serious enough to require that the police be involved then preventing that from happening can put people at risk. There's also the challenge that "get[ting] the situation as far from the house as possible" may itself be construed as an illegal or obstructive act, exposing both you and the people involved to additional risk

Your words are well thought out and there's no reason to apologize. What it comes down to is (1) Complicated situations can arise and people just have to deal with what's happening right there & then, (2) I hate creating rules, and (3) I really really dislike and distrust the police.
One can posit endless What If situations. I'm stating a set of initial conditions based on my values and experiences and expecting that reality will toss challenges into the mix, and that we'll do what needs to be done. The fact that we'll be posting our phone numbers around the party means that Rachel and I will be able to respond to any situations much faster.
Sorry to hear your party had a problem. As the host of BurgerFest I know how difficult it can be to throw a party and how annoying it can be to have people take it for granted.
Thanks to the both of you for throwing it. Come on down to MD sometime and have a burger at Boo Manor.
I am hoping that all of the extended discussion and fightiness that's been going on ends up providing solid roots for party policies and will help lead to more and better awesome parties.
roozle and I will have updated policies, and in your words, more and better awesome parties. And we really want you there to make them even more awesome.

if a guest does require police intervention (i.e. something illegal has been done to them), and they turn to you, what will you do?
if you do not call the police yourselves, what would you do instead?
thanks for clarification :)
