Previous chapter One Week Later - Jensen
“Oh man, this is gross!” Jared was on his knees, the baby laid out on a changing mat in front of him. Jared’s large and awkward fingers were fumbling with the baby’s obviously dirty diaper and the smell was, to be frank, disgusting.
“Come on Jay.” Jensen smiled a little, coming closer. “It’s a natural function - we all have to do it.”
“I can’t undo these tabs - they are too fucking small!” Jared bent over more, holding his breath. “And he won’t stop wriggling.”
“Here.” Jensen knelt down beside his friend and swatted his hands away. Deftly he ripped off the sticky tabs and, lifting the baby’s bottom, he pulled the diaper from under him and deposited it into one of the scented bags that Sherri kept by the changing mat.
“How come you are so good at this?” Jared sat up on his haunches watching Jensen carefully. “I mean - you are disturbingly natural.”
“Nephews and nieces Jay.” Jensen grinned as he wiped the baby’s bottom with a wipe and reached for a clean, fresh diaper. “No big deal.”
As he fastened the baby’s romper, Jensen looked closely at his friend.
Jared still looked pale and his eyes were red, slightly swollen and fuzzy. There were shadows underneath his lashes and his face looked thinner, cheek-bones standing out starkly. Jensen knew that Jared found it hard to sleep and that he had been crying a lot, but there was something in his expression that had not been there before - hope.
“All done.” Jensen patted the baby and handed him back to Jared. The younger man took him, still looking awkward, holding his head and resting it against his shoulder.
“Hey dude - don’t you think that it’s time this little critter had a name? - He’s - he’s nearly seven weeks old and we still call him baby - he needs something of his own.”
“I - I - we had a list.” Jared swallowed, holding the baby closer, nose resting lightly on his head. “I can’t look at it - it just hurts too much.”
“Then just name him Jay - doesn’t matter if you call him Bob or Rumpulstiltskin - he just needs a name.”
“Yeah.” Jared smiled a little “Yeah - you are right - ok - we’ll give him a name.”
Despite his friend’s protests, Jared called his son Jensen Jonathan - a hell of a mouthful for a little creature - and instantly shortened to JJ by everyone.
Jensen felt flattered and embarrassed by this touching tribute and he found himself blushing when Jared told him.
“I couldn’t have done any of this without you man.” He sat by Jensen on the couch, JJ finally sleeping. “You - you led me from a very dark place - and - I owe you - more than I can ever repay.”
“Jared - that’s what friends are for ok?” Jensen ruffled his friends hair fondly - his heart clenching. Every touch - every glance reminded him how much he still loved this man and it was hard, and getting harder, to keep his feelings hidden. Jared was still healing and he didn’t need Jensen’s angst ridden feelings added to the mix.
“I guess you will have to go soon?” Jared’s voice was soft. “You’ll be wanting to see your own family - maybe spend some time with your brother and sister - then I guess there is your work - I know that you’ve had some good offers - you would be a fool to turn them down.”
Jensen stared at Jared; the younger man had his head down, shoulders slumped. It had been seven weeks since his wife died and he was only just beginning to look human again. How could he leave him now? Go back to Richardson or maybe to LA. He couldn’t, wouldn’t do it.
He knew what was important to him in his life right now.
“I’m not going anywhere Jay - as long as your mom doesn’t mind me hanging around a little longer - my film has finished now and I was thinking of taking some time off anyway - you know - have a break, a sabbatical - and I’d like to spend it here.”
He was rewarded with a smile that was closer to the old Jared’s than he had seen in a while and his body felt warm from head to toe.
“Thanks man.” Jared was still smiling and he nudged his shoulder against Jensen’s. “I’ll never forget this - I owe you Jensen - I owe you.”
February - Jared
Jared was watching his baby sleep.
It was late, after midnight, and he was unable to doze off himself, his mind whirling with too many thoughts, too many memories. Nights were the worse, he was unused to sleeping alone now, missing a warm body next to him, missing the physical comfort of another person lying in his arms, missing the shear excitement of being close to the person you loved more than life itself.
JJ was fast asleep, his tiny hand tucked under his round pink cheek, his legs scrunched up tight against his body, Jensen’s duck resting against the top of his head, covered in drool. Jared sat up and trailed a finger across JJ’s hair; it was soft and downy and always smelt of baby shampoo.
Jared sighed; he knew he should go back to bed, maybe try and get a few hours rest before daylight, but he just couldn’t bring himself to leave the nursery. He wanted to prod JJ awake, hold him closer, feel the comfort of a warm body against his own.
“Hey.” Jensen’s voice was fuzzy with sleep. He stood in the doorway, hair standing up on end, green eyes peering short-sightedly. “You should be in bed.”
“Sorry.” Jared felt his lips turn up at the side in a smile. “I just can’t sleep Jen - my mind’s whirling.”
“You won’t be any good for him if you’re exhausted Jared.” Jensen moved a little closer and laid his hand on Jared’s shoulder. His touch was warm, the comfort that Jared desperately needed. “Come on - let’s get you back to bed.”
Jensen led him to his room and watched as he climbed beneath the sheets; Jared yawned, but the thought of closing his eyes, of all those memories flooding in just filled him with dread and he felt tension creep up his spine and into his shoulders, his body rigid.
“Shit - dude - you’re not gonna sleep like that - come on Jared - please - get some sleep.”
“Stay?” He was aware of sounding childish, needy and he hated himself. Jensen had done so much for him and he couldn’t ask for more, but he just needed a physical presence, someone nearby, just so he didn’t have to be alone. “Please?”
Jensen’s expression was unreadable for a moment and Jared could see him gnawing at his bottom lip, something he did when he was worried or upset about things. He was silent for a long moment and then he sighed, nodding inperceptively. “Ok - just till you go off ok - but dude - I am not gonna read you a bedtime story ok? We’ll save that for JJ.”
Jared smiled, already feeling warmer, his body beginning to relax. He felt Jensen move onto the bed and then he felt long arms encircle him and pull him back into a gentle embrace.
Jared let his head rest on Jensen’s chest, let his eyes fall closed. He could feel Jensen’s heartbeat under his cheek and hear Jensen’s soft, rhythmic breathing.
He was almost asleep when he felt something brush across his hair and, in his dream-like state, he was pretty sure that it was Jensen’s lips.
