Previous chapter April - Jared
It was warm and Jared sat in his parent’s garden, JJ in a baby chair at his feet. A bee buzzed lazily round Jared’s head and the baby watched it, chubby hands waving enthusiastically. “It’s a bee dude.” Jared smiled “How exciting can it get?”
His mom came out into the sunshine and Jared turned, lifting his hand in a wave. His momma looked so much happier as if a weight had been lifted off her shoulders. “Do you want lunch out here?” She said with a smile, “I think Jensen is back from taking the dogs.”
“Yeah - thanks.” Jared watched his mom go and sighed. He had been back home for four months now and he realised that he ought to be thinking about moving back to his own house. The thought made his heart pound hard in his chest but he couldn’t put it off forever.
He had been so proud of the house; it had been ideal, new, clean and homely, ten minutes from his parents and with a yard big enough for his dogs. It had been their first house together, their first real home. He remembered carrying Sandy over the threshold, gasping jokingly, as she was three months pregnant at the time and just growing heavier.
Supernatural had ended just as Sandy had found out about the baby and he had been happy to give acting a rest and become a househusband. He felt more at home in Texas than he did in LA and, although he missed Vancouver, the programme and Jensen, he found contentment there, enjoying the domesticity of painting the nursery and working on the garden.
“Hey.” Jensen came into the garden, Sadie and Harley pulling on their leads. The dogs were panting and excited and JJ made a cooing sound, his eyes fixed on the animals. “He sure likes the dogs,” he laughed.
“I think he likes everything.” Jared bent down and picked the baby up. He was growing and becoming more alert, more like a person. He smiled now, big gummy smiles and he was making noises. “Don’t you?”
JJ giggled and dribbled enthusiastically and Jensen shook his head. “He looks like you dude - particularly the dribble.”
“Hey!” Jared smiled cuddling the baby closer. “Jensen - I - I was thinking - maybe its time that I went home. I kinda feel like I’ve outstayed my welcome here - my momma has been great - but - well - she needs a rest.”
“I think that’s a great idea.” Jensen flopped on the grass next to Jared. “Do you - well - do you want me to come with you?”
“Would you?” Jared felt his heart clench a little. “God - Jen - you’ve already done so much - you being here - it really has made the difference.” He swallowed hard. “I would feel better if you came.” He cursed himself inwardly, hoping he didn’t sound too needy, too desperate. “And JJ would miss you.”
“Emotional blackmail, dude.” Jensen grinned again. “Using an innocent baby to tempt me.” He tickled JJ’s tummy, causing the baby to giggle and coo. “How could I say no to either of you?” He said.
Jared’s House
Jared was grateful that his mom had been to the house and cleaned away all of the Christmas decorations and gifts. The house looked tidy and clean, all the surfaces shining, everything put away in its place.
As he carried JJ into the house, he was aware of Sandy’s presence in every room. Her favourite ornament on the shelf, pictures of their wedding on the table, a book open on the coffee table. Everything looked as if she might walk back in at any moment and Jared felt sick, his stomach rolling and he wondered if this had been such a good idea after all.
Jensen watched his friend; he could see how pale Jared had gone, see how he clutched onto the baby like a lifeline. This was Jared’s home, the house he had shared with Sandy and the house that they were meant to be a family in. Jensen bit his lip hard enough to draw blood and he moved up behind Jared, putting his hand to the back of Jared’s spine, rubbing gently.
“It’s ok to feel like this Jay,” he whispered. “It’s ok to grieve - but - but you have to put it behind you now - for JJ’s sake - do you understand?” He felt Jared tense under his fingers and he rubbed harder, tenderly massaging the skin, feeling Jared tremble. “I’ll be here Jared - I’m not going anywhere ok? You don’t have to do this alone - you have your family - you have JJ and you have me - it’s gonna be alright Jared - I promise.”
It was hard; Jared was still fragile and, despite Jensen’s best efforts, was still insular and withdrawn. He wasn’t eating too well and he was still having trouble sleeping. Although he didn’t want to make a habit of it, for several reasons, Jensen often spent his nights in Jared’s bedroom. He would either sit with his friend until he slept or lay on his bed, cuddling Jared and talking softly.
Jensen knew that Jared took comfort from his presence but it was so hard to be so close to the man he had loved for so long. He wanted Jared, wanted him badly and, although he knew he couldn’t have him, it didn’t stop the ache that seemed to throb through his body every time the younger man was near. Sometimes he considered leaving, going back to LA, reading a few more scripts, maybe taking another film job but he couldn’t do it.
Jared needed him - so he stayed.
Plans
“We should go out,” Jensen announced one day as they sat on the couch, drinking coffee and watching the game. “It seems fucking ages since I drank a long, cool beer and it’s certainly hot enough.” He gave Jared a nudge with his shoulder, “Come on - we can stop for Chili first - make a night of it.”
“I don’t know.” Jared looked hesitant and Jensen realised that the younger man hadn’t been out of the house very much at all. Apart from his family, Jared seemed to shun human contact, he certainly never read any scripts or contacted his agent and, as far as Jensen could see, he never made any phone calls or saw any of his old friends like Chad and Mike. “What about JJ?”
“Your mom will have him for the night dude.” Jensen was pleading now. “Come on Jared - when he gets older it’s gonna be harder and harder to leave him - and besides - it’ll do you good.”
“I guess.” Jared shrugged. “Ok - we’ll do it!” He grinned. “Chili and beer it is.”
Sherri was delighted to have her grandson back and soon they were ensconced in a small but lively bar not far from the centre of San Antonio. They were replete with chili and Jensen was pleased to see that Jared looked a lot, lot better, his face flushed with colour, a faint smile on his face.
Jensen wasn’t sure when beer turned to shots but he tried, valiantly, to stay sober. Jared, however, had no such qualms and now he was out, drinking his memories away seemed to be an ideal option. He was past buzzed and heading towards wasted when Jensen decided they should call it a night. Jared stared at him and then grinned “Sure,” he slurred. “Guess we should be heading back.”
Jensen called a cab and they waited by the bar for it to arrive. Jared was barely able to stand, leaning heavily in Jensen’s personal space, his hands all over Jensen’s chest and shoulders, reminding him of old times, when they used to go to the CW promotion parties.
The cab arrived and Jensen climbed into the back, only to find Jared falling over his feet and landing almost on top of him. Jensen let out oof of surprise and tried to push Jared off, suddenly aware that he was getting hard and desperate to hide that particular fact from his friend.
“Hey!” Jared managed to right himself and he leant against Jensen. “I had a good time - good time.” He looked down at his hand, resting on Jensen’s thigh and grinned. “Look,” he said. “M’hand.”
“Yeah.” Jensen bit the inside of his cheek and tried to move away. Jared’s face was flushed and his eyes wide and innocent, the grief of the past few months washed away in a flood of alcohol. “So it is.”
“Hey.” Jared was staring pointedly at Jensen now and Jensen felt a blush rise in his cheeks. Jared began to giggle. “You - you’ve got a boner Jen!”
“Must be a bumpy ride.” Jensen ground out and he thrust himself back in his seat, his hands running through his hair in panic. “We’ll soon be home Jay.”
“Don’t wanna go home.” Jared sounded child-like and lost. “Wanna stay out and drink more beer - no one to nag me now,” he said and Jensen winced knowing that Jared would never even breach that subject sober. “I’m all alone.”
“You have me.” Jensen was cold stone sober now and praying they reached home soon. “Remember that.”
“You have a boner...” Jared’s mind was wandering again. “Lemme - lemme help you.”
“No Jay - you’re drunk - lets get home and get you to bed.” Jensen shakes his head. He wants this but it can’t happen, it’s wrong and it’s bad and it will only lead to sorrow for both of them.
“Look...” He breathes a sigh of relief as the cab pulls up outside the house, “we’re home.”
“Yeah.” Jared gets out of the cab and wobbles to the side, leaning there, waiting for Jensen to pay. Jensen fumbles with his money and manages to give the driver a huge tip as well as his fare before hustling Jared inside, trying to prop up 6ft 5inches of drunken friend.
They get as far as the sofa and Jared stumbles, falls and, in a move surprisingly quick for a drunken man, flips Jensen so he is crushed beneath the younger man on the couch.
Jensen is breathing heavily, trying to push Jared away; his head is spinning with more than just alcohol and he is so turned on, so hard, he feels like he could hammer nails with his cock.
Jared is giggling, mouth close to Jensen’s ear. “You have been such a good friend,” he mumbles. “Lemme - lemme do something for you.”
Jensen swallows and, as Jared suddenly flexes his hips, Jensen knows what Jared has in mind. He panics, trying to flip his friend off but, despite his weight loss, Jared is solid muscle and very determined. He just laughs and pushes down again, making Jensen hiss and flush with pleasure and shame.
Jensen realises that, incredibly given his drunken state, Jared is hard too. He guesses it is because he has been so long without any sexual contact and also because it is a hard body and Jared is too far gone to realise what is happening. It is Jensen’s last lucid thought, as Jared begins to push down, grinding against Jensen again and again until the pleasure, the sensation, and the pure need is too much and Jensen comes with a groan.
“Yeah - that’s it,” Jared slurs and he moans once, suddenly tensing then flopping boneless into Jensen’s neck, snores starting even before his nose snuffles into Jensen’s burning hot skin.
It takes a while for Jensen to move his friend; Jared is a dead weight, mouth open, drool dribbling down his chin. For a hysterical moment, Jensen muses how much Jared looks like his baby son for a moment, arms flung out, face soft and pink in repose. Then he shakes that thought out of his head and, gently, undoes Jared’s jeans and pulls them down, boxers too, throwing them into the washing hamper, hiding the evidence of their drunken passion, their mistake.
He finds a blanket and covers Jared up with it, then he strips his own dirty and sticky underwear away and puts it with Jared’s to wash later.
When he finally gets to bed, he lies sleepless for a long, long time.
He just prays that Jared will be too hung over to remember anything.
