Jared

When he wakes it feels like there is a marching band in his head. The percussion section is just warming up and there are definitely trumpets blaring. He feels hot, sticky and very, very sick and he lies for a moment, staring at the grainy ceiling, trying hard to recall just what had happened last night.

He is wearing nothing but a tee-shirt. There is a blanket over his naked torso and his hair is stuck to his face with drool. He remembers chili and a few cold beers but little else and he realises that Jensen must have got him home and cleaned him up. He always did have the tendency to vomit after shots.

Groaning he gets up and staggers across the room, sloshing water on his face. He puts the coffee pot on and wraps a blanket round his middle, throwing off the sweaty tee and running a hand through his hair. God - his mom would be here soon - he needed a shower.

He swallows two pain killers dry and goes upstairs. Strangely, despite the hangover and the unsteadiness of his limbs, he feels really, really good. Boneless and relaxed, better than he has in months. He smiles to himself; Jensen was right, he really did need a good night out.

He is finished showering when he hears his friend stirring and decides that they both need coffee. If Jensen feels anything like him, then only caffeine will do. He smiles as he pours out the strong, brown liquid.

God - he feels good.

Jensen is bleary eyed and yawning; he looks surprised as Jared hands him the coffee, perching on the end of the bed and scratching his head.

“Are you ok Jensen?”

“Yeah.” His voice sounds hoarse. “You?”

“Hung over - but yeah - I feel great - must have been a good night?”

Jensen flushes a little, pink appearing across his high cheek-bones. His expression is unreadable and Jared moves a little closer so that he can pat his shoulder. “Thanks,” he says.

Jensen jumps at the touch and Jared lets his hand fall away, frowning.

“Are you sure you are ok?”

“Yep - feeling a little hung over myself.” Jensen smiles but the smile doesn’t quite reach his eyes. “Thanks for the coffee.”

“Mom will be back with JJ soon - I just wanted to look more human - and not breath tequila fumes all over my son.” Jared smiled. “I guess - by the way I woke up this morning - that last night must have been awesome.”

“You - you don’t remember anything?”

“I remember chili and beer.”

Jensen is trying to avoid his gaze and he feels suddenly guilty - although he isn’t sure why he should. “Did I do something I shouldn’t? Strip and run naked through the streets of San Antonio?”

“No.” Jensen shudders a laugh. “No - no it’s fine - you just got a little wasted that’s all.”

“That’s all?” Jared smiles. “I must have thrown up man - you cleaned me up - and got me to sleep - thanks.”

“You’re welcome.”

Jared watches the expressions play across his friend’s face and he frowns. Jensen seems to go through a range of emotions; guilt, worry, relief and something else, something almost indiscernible; disappointment.

The chime of the doorbell stops Jared from saying anything more and he goes downstairs to get his son, Jensen’s eyes boring into him every step of the way.

Jensen

He wonders if it would have been better that Jared remembered their night of drunken passion because then, at least, it would have been out in the open and he wouldn’t have to feel so fucking guilty.

Weeks passed and they had settled into some sort of cosy, domesticity. Jared was much happier now and spent hours and hours with his son. They took JJ to the mall, to the park and even swimming. Jensen went with Jared to all of the baby’s medical check-ups, knew just how much JJ weighed, knew how long he was, whether he had had the right shots. He was growing to love Jared’s son almost as much as he loved Jared and it was getting harder and harder to take.

If Jensen was honest with himself; he would say that he was relieved when Jared married Sandy. It meant that, for Jensen, there would be closure. His friend was happy, his friend was content, Jensen didn’t have to watch Jared’s back anymore and he could move on, try to forget how much he loved his friend, try to find someone of his own.

He could stay in touch with Jared but not have to be with him 24/7. They could hang out together on set, but at night, Jared went home to his wife and Jensen to his apartment.

When the series finished, they parted friends and Jared was none the wiser. Jensen kept in contact, expressed joy at the fact his friend was going to be a dad and kept looking for that special someone.

The problem was, Jensen had already given his heart and now he was finding it impossible to snatch it back and give it to someone else.

He loved Jared and, it seemed, he always would.

It was nearing Jared’s birthday when Jensen got sent the script. It was a small but integral part in a movie which might be both commercially and critically acclaimed and it might be the break for which he had been waiting. It also meant he could get away from San Antonio, put some distance between him and Jared.

It wasn’t that he wanted too - more that he needed too - and he found himself ringing his agent and saying yes.

“Hey.” Jared was sitting in the garden, playing with his son. JJ was standing on his father’s thigh, wobbling spectacularly, cooing and drooling, his chubby fingers wrapped around Jared’s large hand/ “Look.” Jared gestured to the baby. “He can stand!”

“Good job.” Jensen swallowed back the lump in his throat. “He’ll be walking in no time dude.”

“He’s a little young for that.” Jared caught JJ up and blew a raspberry on his fat stomach. The baby giggled, hands waving and Jared laughed, delightedly.

Jensen gazed at his friend; Jared looked so much better, he was gaining weight and sleeping better. He was getting out of the house more and beginning to make contact with old friends. Now was a good time, Jensen reassured himself, before Jared became too dependent on him.

“Hey Jay?” Jensen squatted down on the grass next to them, his finger running through JJ’s soft tufts of hair. “I - I - my agent sent this script - I - I can’t turn it down man - I have to go back to LA.”

“Sure.” Jared’s expression belied his calm reaction. Jensen saw panic, pain and confusion flit through those cat-like eyes he loved so much and he felt his heart plummet. “I - I understand - you’ve been great Jensen - I don’t know what JJ and I would have done without you.” His throat worked convulsively, Adam’s apple bobbing up and down. “You - I mean - you’ll come back won’t you?”

Jensen didn’t know what to say; he wanted to come back - but on what terms. God he loved Jared so much and he couldn’t cope with this, he wanted more than just friendship but he knew that Jared was too fragile to approach with that subject and that, even if he ever dare talk to Jared about his feelings, his best friend wasn’t even gay.

“I don’t know.” It sounded lame. “I - I don’t know how long filming will take - you know?”

“You - stay in touch - yeah?” Jared looked close to tears and Jensen saw him pull JJ closer, clinging on to the baby like a drowning man clings to a raft. “I’ll text you and e-mail you - you’ll want to see how Jensen Jr here is growing won’t you?”

“Of course.” He could barely see for his own tears. “Don’t be a stranger man.”

Jared took him to the airport and he and JJ waited whilst he checked in. He felt low and he felt selfish but he knew he had to do this thing. Perhaps time would heal things for both of them, but for the sake of his friendship, he had to go now - had to put some distance between him and Jared - before he did something he would forever regret.

He thought of that night, of Jared’s drunken passion, the feeling of Jared’s body grinding into his. God he wanted that to happen again - but he wanted Jared sober and wanting him too. Jensen swallowed, accepting the hug that Jared gave him, dropping a kiss on JJ’s soft head.

“Take care of yourself,” he said - as his flight was called in the background. “And don’t forget to eat - and remember that JJ has his booster shot next month - and he likes to sleep with ducky - remember that!”

Jared laughed, wetly and raised his hand, “Ok Grandma.” He joked, lamely. “I’ll make sure he’s ok.”

As Jensen walked away, he felt the tears begin and he couldn’t trust himself to look back. Instead he looked at the floor and mouthed “I love you."

When he turned round, one last time, Jared had gone.
