The Return

“So, Chris,” the interviewer said with a grin, “number one with a bullet and one of the best love songs I’ve heard in a while, tell me, is there someone special in your life?”.”

Chris swallowed, hard, his eyes on the interviewer’s perky, smiley face. The girl was clearly happy to be interviewing him and keen to get an exclusive. Thing was, he couldn’t give her one, there had been someone special but Chris had let him go.

Despite everything, despite his success, his sudden fame, the fact that his records were selling, Chris wasn’t happy. He felt strangely unsatisfied, empty almost. He had thought that this is what he wanted, that this would make him happy.

What he had realised, what he had realised to his shame and utter devastation that the thing that did make him happy was far, far behind him and that he had made a terrible mistake.
***
A year and a half after he had left the apartment, Chris found himself outside on the porch, fumbling with his keys. He didn’t know what sort of welcome he would get, hell, he didn’t even know if Jared was still here. All he did know is that he was still desperately in love with Jared and that he wanted to be forgiven, to be accepted back into Jared’s life again.

Chris was sure that he could spend the rest of his life making it up to Jared and he put his key in the lock, sudden excitement biting at him, his mouth dry with nervous anticipation.
***
There was a huge, black SUV in the drive that Chris didn’t recognise and he wondered if Jared had bought a new car. The lawn looked tidier, flowers planted in the border. There were a new set of curtains up in the window and a joke mat on the doorstep saying ‘ Beware of the Cat.

Chris set his suitcase down in the hall and pocketed his keys. He noticed that there was a thick, red stair carpet on the stairs and the hall had been painted. He began to wonder if Jared had actually moved and he rubbed a hand through his hair, nerves making sweat stand out on the back of his neck.

Suddenly a broad man came strolling into the hall, jacket in hand. He was taller than Chris was and well muscled, wearing a casual shirt and ripped jeans. A pair of trendy glasses perched on a freckled nose and a silver necklace sparkled on a sun-browned throat.

The man turned to see Chris standing there, his green eyes widening and he dropped the jacket, putting both hands up and moving back, his head shaking.

“Who the fuck are you?”

“I was just about to ask you the same thing,” Chris felt his grip on his own suitcase tighten in anger, “where is Jared?”

“What business is that of yours?” the man sounded angry now and he was pushing himself off the wall and moving towards Chris, bringing himself up to his full height, his hands tightening into fists.

Chris swallowed and raised his own hands, shaking his head, he was about to speak when there was a crash behind them and both men paused, their eyes flicking side wards.

Jared stood in the doorway, the tray he had been carrying upside down on the floor, cups broken, brown liquid spilling out.

Despite the look of fear and shock on his face, he looked better than Chris had ever seen him look. He had put on weight, his chest thick with muscle, his chestnut hair soft and wavy around his shoulders. His face was brown, his eyes bright and Chris felt his heart contract as he realised what he had once had and what he had now lost.

“Chris?” Jared sounded broken, hurt, amazed, his shaking hands suddenly thrust into his pockets, “what the fuck?”

“Chris?” the other man turned and stared at Chris, his eyes suddenly as hard and as cold as Jade. “This is the fucking guy who left you in that state,” he looked angry, confused, “why is he here?”

“I don’t know,” Jared’s voice was soft, vulnerable, “I don’t know why he is here,” he shook his head and leant back against the wall, his whole body slumping down, redness creeping across his high-boned cheeks.

The other man moved forward, pushing Chris aside and wrapping his strong arms around Jared’s waist. He was staring at Chris, his eyes so bitter that Chris could barely stand under his gaze, his nerves making his mouth so dry he could barely speak.

“I - I came to - to see you,” he addressed Jared directly, trying to ignore the other man’s presence, trying to ignore the looks of hatred and vitriol that were being shot his way, “I - I missed you Jared.”

“What?” Jared stared back at him, speckled hazel eyes sparkling with something that Chris couldn’t read, “I don’t understand.”

“I made a mistake,” Chris was aware of sounding pathetic, pleading, but he felt as if he had been ripped open and laid bare, “I admit it, I was an ass and I made a mistake, I - I came to tell you that - and to tell you that I loved you, that I still loved you and I’m sorry.”

“Too fucking late for that,” the other man spoke suddenly; his arms tightening around Jared’s waist, holding the younger man up, holding him close, putting his body, like a shield, between Jared and Chris.

“Who are you?” Chris said, unable to stand it a moment longer. “And what the fuck is it to you?”

“My name is Jensen Ackles and I live here, I’ve lived here for nearly a year - with Jared - we are together - do you understand. I’m here with him, I’m here for him and I love him. That makes it my business.”

“Is this true?” Chris’s heart sank in his chest and he felt like he might throw up, regret and pain warring in his stomach, “Jared is this true?”

Jared looked torn, his eyes flicking from the man in front of him to Chris, wild and panicked. His face was pale now and he was trembling, unable to speak, unable to function. He swallowed hard, pushing Jensen gently away and stalking down the hall, back stiff, body rigid, the sound of his hitching breathing echoing through the tension in the room.

Chris stared into Jensen Ackle’s bright green eyes, his teeth set in his lower lip, his heart pounding.

He had a fight on his hands and it was a fight that he was determined to win.

Jared was his.
