There's a guy who consistently rides the same bus that I catch in the morning--no big deal there, of course, as I recognize plenty of the riders as regulars now. But this guy has a unique sense of cool that's immediately apparent. In my mind he's just "Dude"--not "The Dude," as in The Big Lebowski character, just "Dude." Every morning as I watch ( Read more... )

Not to be an ass, but in contrast to your situation, I am in film heaven (aka Dublin). A nice spread of the european indies, plus revivals and tributes to directors on limited run in two posh theatres within a 10 minute walk of where I live, plus about 2 more decent theatres mixing american blockbusters with filmfest winners within a 20 minute walk. Steep student discounts everywhere ( ... )

Those are certainly some tough questions...I've always been under the impression that outside the U.S. there are more government subsidies for films, but I don't know if that would stand up to scrutiny. Even if it did, it wouldn't really account for so many good theaters on its own. I wonder if there are any sociological studies out there pertaining to different national or regional film cultures...

Also, I have to ask: while you were in India, did you happen to hear anything about a TV program, from the 80s I think, called "Hum Log"?

Nerd. :)

I can't believe you're not interested in any of the summer movie offerings. Yeah, they're tiresome and overhyped. Yeah, the theaters are crowded with obnoxious idiots. Yeah, I'm too lazy to see them in the theaters myself. But to call it a "drought" is a bit extreme, even if intentionally ironic.

Well, to be fair, I'll certainly go see a summer movie if it's with a group of people. Not just summer movies, really, even general big-budget flicks or comedies that I wouldn't go see on my own. It doesn't happen too often, but I did go see The Bourne Supremacy and the most recent Harry Potter movie in theaters; there are probably others I'm forgetting about, too.

It's not even that aren't some good movies around--rather, there's a certain apathy on my part that's playing in as well. I just don't feel *enthused* about going to see anything that's showing right now in town. Hopefully that will change.

It's really the obnoxious idiots that ruin it for me. I have pretty much given up on going to the theater when if it's really that good I can rent it in a couple months (the turnover time has gone down I think) for less money and enjoy it more.

This entry makes more sense now. I got invited to Lake Chelan for Memorial Day weekend. Does that mean I officially am One of You now?

Seriously, it's almost... bewildering the extent to which people have just included me in their plans. The pressure I've encountered to move here is unreal. Nothing remotely like this has ever happened to me!
