Chuck Palahniuk is EASILY my favorite author (followed closely by Francesca Lia Block) and I would recommend all of his books. However, the man himself has had a disturbing past and some of that creepiness gets into the books. He's vulgar, and violence sometimes but it's really beautiful writing.

i'm an old man and like my old man books...
Earth: an intimate history by richard fortey [if you're not into the earph and geology, this book is not for you - it's written more like a travel account with some things mentioned about the history of the field]
an american lion - it's a biography about andrew jackson, joe got it for me last chana-christmas. again, if you're not into old dead white guys and american history, probably not for you. i will say though, the man was named "old hickory" because he almost beat a man to death who tried to shoot him with his old hickory cane...
unscientific america/the republican war on science - our country is full of science reh-tards, blah blah blah. if the politics of scientific education and that kind of shit aren't your bag, pass on these two books as well.
my all time favourite book ever: bear vs. shark, by chris bachelder. it's about how media and technology make us retarded, but it's written in hilarious novel form. very tongue and cheek.

Not really "light reading" there, but I will take these into consideration. I'm thinking these are more likely to go in my library list than my xmas gift list. Its nice to branch out into new genres, and I'll try anything once!

True, it is. :) Still, those seem like the sort of books I'm likely to read just once and not repeatedly, so... library! (and if I'm wrong, I can always buy them later)
If you're interested, check out my Goodreads.com list. My favorites include: The Lovely Bones by Alice Sebold Running with Scissors by Augusten Burrougs Dead Until Dark by Charlaine Harris (part of the Sookie Stackhouse series) I also like Laurell K. Hamilton, Katie MacAlister, Suzanne Brockmann, and other, more-embarassing to admit chick-lit authors. I'm big into "light" reading...I really don't want to think too hard, I like to read to be entertained!

It's actually the 6th book in the series, but it's worth getting there imo.
