SO I POSTED THIS EVERYWHERE... but I think it's important.

(If you are a friend of mine on MySpace or sometime stumbled on my blogger account you may have seen this)...

While reading Jezebel today I see this link: Taffey Anderson, a mom from Oregon, says she plans on burning The Book Of Bunny Suicides, which her teenage son checked out from his high school library, because she thinks the book is "not OK ( Read more... )

I don't understand why she isn't at least fined and her son prevented from graduating. I mean, if she's point-blank admitting to stealing school property, then she should be fined, and if she doesn't pay, her son can't graduate until they pay to have the book replaced. It's that easy. :)

Well, that's the most that could happen, apparently. If the book isn't returned, he will be fined and won't be able to check out any books. Then, if it isn't paid in the next 5 years, he won't graduate.

But isn't that a horrible lesson for him to learn? Not to mention he's getting punished because she doesn't like something! You know what, she probably won't care that he wouldn't get a diploma, anyway ;)

That's messed up. It isn't hard enough to get kids interested in reading. Whatever she does, she shouldn't read the book, and discuss in a rational manner with her child the content of the book, what she agrees with or disagrees with. You can't see it but my eyes are rolling like a slot machine!

Exactly! This book came from a list for Reluctant Readers, which this school has a disproportionate amount of (after buying all these books from the list, the circulation rate of books shot up-it at least tripled last year).

But you're right, it would make so much more sense to have a rational discussion and discuss what's so "bad" about it.

Re: your eyes rolling like a slot machine... that's hilarious. A great simile :)

1. ?! Yeah.
2. I think they have a copy in the library. But Fahrenheit 451 is one of those books that they should have a class set of, so you know, an English teacher can teach with it.

Seriously though, their class sets were obscene. I was lucky to have class sets of Brave New World, Cat's Cradle, Tom Sawyer, The Scarlet Letter, about about 5 others for AP. Everything else was shitty old Westerns or 5th-grade level books. It was sad.
