Yet another example of gender innequality and the change in acceptable social behavior. Had you done that to her, you'd be in jail right now and the entire righteous community in this building would go lynch mob on your ass.
But she does it to you? And everyone just thinks its vaguely funny in a 'sucks to be you, man' kind of way.
There is generally little equality anywhere, especially in regards to gender. Despite the proclamation of civil liberties and equal rights and all that nonsense (because they're just words, powerful ones, but words can always be overcome), very little has changed in terms of mentality. A woman who can defend herself, capably, is "butch." A man who can do the same is often glared at askance (perhaps it's my stature that confuses people on that matter).
I think there's always a necessity for give and take--while I can't quote if Shikamaru was genuinely hurt or not--and a certain physicality is always present in all relationships. I suppose what I'm getting at is communication--without effective use of said communication (which is certainly not always verbal), boundaries cannot be established. I think everyone should be capable of defending him or herself.
Reality and perception of reality don't need to match completely. It’s in changing our perception and mentality that we actually manage to change the reality itself. Mass agreement and acceptance, rather than individual cases. Women have been steadily growing into a more dominant and volatile persona, the Cosmo Girl, justified in being a total bitch to the rest of the world by asserting that she's just being independent. Men, at the same time, are being whittled down the emotionally unstable, ambiguous wimps. Both are bullshit, but both are the extremes created by an overall will for change.
Yes, I agree, obviously physicality is a key part of functioning relationships. Human beings are tactile in nature and physical contact binds people due to chemical reactions in the brain (it was a fucking long lecture last year, don't ask me for the specific names and details). But that doesn't give us the right to disregard respect for another person. No one, is allowed to act without consideration towards anyone else, especially if it’s

There's always care that must be taken.
