700,000 people in Zimbabwe are homeless, jobless, and being forced into rural, government controlled areas in a political ploy to keep the current leader in office. U.S. citizens are lucky to live in a place where they can find safety from hostility, while still exercising the right to speak out against it. However, the flag burning amendment is one of the first of a series of laws that over time will threaten the very principles that this nation was founded on. The fact that so much time, effort, and money is being spent on banning something that is not even a major problem is frightening and disheartening. Flag burning is not running rampant in the U.S., in fact, the majority of it takes place outside of our borders. We can do nothing about the opinions of others, except react with grace under pressure. Perhaps if more time was spent reshaping our actions and reputation, the safety of the U.S. would not be a serious issue at this point. I ask you, what is this amendment for? If someone knows that they will go to jail for an ( ... )

good doria. tell them what for. however, try to keep it specific when you write to your representative or senator...zimbabwe is unrelated to the issue at hand, that of the flag amendment. throwing extraneous details in there is likely to make the representative think that you're more radical and unfocused than not...and congressmen and women receive a LOT of radical correspondence, so you want to separate yourself as much as possible from that so that your issue can be taken as seriously as possible. Your message is good, but again, the key is to be very specific when writing to a representative. And yes, they do read them...several months ago i wrote an unsolicited letter to my local house representative about the patriot act and the several votes on it that were coming up at the time, and I received a reply in the mail from him that actually addressed the specific concerns I made in my letter, so i know it wasn't a cookie-cutter reply. Now whether it was him or one of his assistants who wrote it, i don't know, but he did sign ( ... )
