Not enough exercise

This is the most depressing thing I've read in months.

Women need 1 hour of exercise per day to avoid weight gainSo as we age, we need an hour of moderate exercise per day. Who has time for an hour every day? I sure don't. I can barely fit in two or three taekwondo classes per week. The hour long class only has 30-45 minutes of vigorous ( Read more... )

Reading the article, it doesn't seem that bad, actually - the hour of activity is for people who did absolutely no calorie control; it seems to suggest that if you're reasonable about your food intake, you'd need less.

And it's an hour of moderate activity - that can include things like climbing the stairs at work, or general life activity, not necessarily an hour of heavy workout every single day.

Plus, the weight gain was an average of 5lb in 3 years. Not perfect, but not huge or even really significant. I could live with that.

So... it's a little frustrating, but not end-of-the-world.

I saw a comment on another blog suggesting a similar approach to general life activity. I'm doing what I can, like taking the stairs again at work now that my knee is doing better. But I'm still having trouble finding ways to fit extra activity into my day.

I guess I'm going to have to make good on my threats to drag my hubby out of the house for a walk every evening.

I haven't read the article, but there's a reasonable chance that the time you spend walking to class may count. I think a lot of things that say an hour of exercise per day don't mean vigorous exercise. I saw something suggesting that a sprint/walk/repeat pattern may generate many of the same benefits in a shorter workout. Unfortunately, I can't find the article now. Also, remember that this isn't binary, just because you can't hit an hour a day, doesn't mean an hour 2-3 times a week doesn't do you a bunch of good. That said, an after-dinner walk is almost certainly a good idea. Too bad I never had time for one myself.
