It's quite simple. Xanga = commercialistic suck, LJ = nice, simple, clean, opensource.

but xanga is also easy to use and makes sense, where as this is just like ... telling a blind person to color code files. rarr!

Yeah, LJs are harder to customize (maybe not w/ a paid account, I dunno), but it is possible.
I like the style of LJ more than Xanga; also there aren't any annoying little ads.
