I have recently gotten into a veritable frenzy of project-finishing and stash-using. I consider this a good thing, particularly since I have an abundance of both.
I am totally in love with the KnitPicks metal needles. They do have fixed needles in the 16" cables and in the small size needles, and I find I love these the most. The interchangeable needles - I think I'm missing something - mine keep coming unscrewed while I'm working just enough to catch the yarn and be a pain. The needles themselves are everything awesome and the pointy tips mean that learning how to knit lace and cable-type thingies has been incredibly easier. I switched over one project from bamboo to the KnitPicks needles and the ease of use totally hooked me.
I had a couple friends in my knitting group who had the same problem with the Options needles coming unscrewed from the cable. I was helping one of them with a lace project and the needle tip came off the cable in mid stitch. We tightened it again and the same thing happened about 30 minutes later. That convinced me that I never needed to purchase that product. That and the fact that I have amassed quite a number of needles already over the years and wouldn't really gain anything by purchasing an Options set.
That being said, the sock sets that Knit Picks sell are very tempting as the sock needles (metal) are amazing! I've heard mixed things about the Harmony sets and I won't knit anything below a 3 with wood needles as I will break them.
I know what you mean - I wasn't considering it because I had a nice collection of needles going. But I've lost them somewhere - the whole bag of circs disappeared a few weeks ago, and I've looked everywhere. So if I'm going to start over, I figure it may as well be with a set.
I've had the same unscrewing problem with the Options metal needles, although it only happens on some projects and some size needles, so it doesn't bother me too much.
That said, I ADORE the Harmony wood sock needles. I always feel like I'm going to break wee wood needles, but even the 0's feel really sturdy and I haven't bent them yet. I could use about three more sets of the 2's...
They're very smooth. They've clearly been heavily lacquered. They're not as smooth as Addis, but WAY smoother than bamboo or, my previous favorite, Brittanys.
Okay, third time’s the charm. I keep typing this out, and losing it (stupid trackpad, I keep accidentally hitting some magic combination that sends me “back” in the browser, so *poof!*). Frustrating. Anyway, here’s my 2 cents worth

I wondered about the key issue. ;) And I've heard the issues with the metal connectors, but it always sounds like it's resolved by customer service, so I don't consider it a factor. I mean, sure, it would be annoying, but it sounds like it's a known problem that they've addressed and are willing to correct, so it doesn't put me off buying them.
I'd like to go with the original guy, but that is just not in my budget this week/year/decade. The best thing about the KnitPicks ones is that they are so beautiful and at a price I can actually justify. Especially if you start adding up the price of replacing all those needles individually.
