I spent today and yesterday in Cologne, visiting the parents, V. and T. Weirdly enough I don't have this instant feeling of "I am at home here" anymore when I'm there. Rather I felt like I was coming home when I got off the train here in Heidelberg. Strange. Also somehow Cologne seems shabbier and less friendly than it used to be. Hm. Maybe I'm ( Read more... )

Loving (and sympathizing with) your horror at correcting essays! Oh, my goodness, they do some awful things, don't they? I certainly hope you don't expect much better here! OK, perhaps at Stanford, but even there, don't get your hopes too high! They aren't taught to write decent English, and they don't seem to know much about a decent argument here either. And citations - well, some will do it just fine, and others... let's just say they can be quite 'creative.'

I think the main problem in my case is that German students are not taught to write essays at all. I wrote my first one when I went to England for a year. But that doesn't really explain the abuse of the German language...

I'm not sure much of anything explains the abuse of [insert native language here] by students.... ;)
