In my experience, both bleeding-heart liberals and hedonists are cowards. Personally I've had enough of the left's crusade against "binaries", mostly because they're not aware of the binaries they create in the process; I mean, these fools believe that "post-colonialism" is universally liberating.

My philosophical/political hero is Edmund Burke. Read his book "Reflections on the Revolution in France"; fits in with your quote that the brain and the hands are mediated by the heart. He talks about the importance of sentiments and traditions and the dangers of radicalism. I also am a big fan of Nassim Nicholas Taleb, who seems to be saying a lot of the same things by explaining how week human epistemology is and why we shouldn't try to tamper with things too much lest we blow ourselves up. That's all in his book "The Black Swan."

I don't imagine that civilization is coming to an end, though maybe the West is going to take it in the ass this century. That said, we're all extremely deluded; or maybe I'm wrong about that...
