BBC Eagle of the Ninth

Oct 11, 2012 22:55

Continuing on from a previous post, I though people might be interested in seeing some screen captures from the BBC 70s version of Eagle of the Ninth, including most of the main characters (complete with very 70s hair and facial hair!).

There are a some lovely Marcus & Esca scenes in it.

Oooh, I'd be very interested in getting a better copy, if you don't mind (and Hooray for that Australian ABC replay - it seems to be the source of all the bootleg copies hanging around). I rewatched mine as I was making the screencaps, and despite parts of it being in rather sad condition, I was reminded just how much I liked it.

She's going to send me a copy and I'll rip it to .avi files and put it on my website!

Thanks for these caps. How nifty! I love the Celts, and Marcus looks much more my mental image (Esca, however, er, no).

Woohoo!

I'm not sure about Guern's Comedy Hair, but Marcus's oculist disguise more than makes up for it. :-D

I note that as in the movie, the further North you go, the fewer clothes men seem to wear. Seems a very Geordie approach to wardrobe...

There is quite a lot of comedy hair (and moustaches) in the show *g*. Marcus' diguise is great (though I'm not sold on his fancy beard!)

True about the geordie approach to wardrobe! I'm also amused that Esca's disguise clothes seem to be a sheepskin vest and tight stripy pants - more 70s hippy than celtic warrior!

I love how all the Britons have facial hair, because that is seriously what I think of when I think of Roman Britain.

I like Esca's subtle tattoos (or maybe it is just that my copy is so bad it is difficult to see them!)

Yes, the facial hair is certainly a contrast to all the clean shaven romans! I'm most amused by the wandering Druid - who has rather a nicely styled hair cut and beard, compared with all the other celts.

Sometimes I think I am the only person who imagines Marcus rather darker (although otherwise not at all like that actor). He doesn't quite have the Aquila Family Unibrow, either, but at least he has the nose, and his occulist disguise is awesomesauce ( ... )

I think Esca looks younger in the DVD than in the screencaps, weirdly. I thought he looked too old until I started watching it, but I'm really kind of sold on him now.

CH *could* be Egyptian, I think - and oddly, Placidus looks VERY Egyptian, which I suppose works with him being a sort of Syrian Greek.

The hair is mad. It's like Britannia is the Island of Hair. :-D

IDK about Hieronimianus, but it is hard to tell from the tiny pictures. OTOH, he's the only Sutcliff character I have clear mental casting for, so if he's not Ghassan Massoud, I will always be disappointed.

Haircuts are a sign of Roman oppression!

Ghassan Massoud *would* be a better Hieronimianus, it's true. The guy they cast is too tubby. I can't see the Legate as tubby.

The previous post reminded me to dig out my copy (and having found it, I figured that I might as well take a few screencaps while rewatching *g*)
