Chapter 3 Chapter 4
Junsu could feel the rough hands of his father all over his body. They were hitting him everywhere, they were hitting him so hard he could barely breathe. The little boy gasped for air, his eyes brimming with tears. His father was screaming but his low voice got lost into a whirlwind of incoherent words. It didn't make any sense to him. Nothing made any sense right now.
He lost his balance when he felt his father backhanding him hard. Junsu's body made contact with the cold floor, the crash squeezing all the air out of his lungs. He gasped, his useless body trembling on the floor while his blurred vision noticed the shoe of his father coming closer and closer. Automatically, he tried to cover his face with his arms while he curled himself into a ball.
It didn't help, the shoe made contact with his leg, causing Junsu to scream in pain. After the third kick, his tensed body went limp. Junsu could feel his frail body bouncing onto the door every time the shoe made contact with several parts of his body. The pain was everywhere. Every single cell of his body was screaming for the pain to stop, for his father to stop. Yet, his quivering lips refused to pronounce a single coherent word, his voice lost.
The pain became unbearable, causing incoherent whimpers to leave his mouth. He started to feel lightheaded. A sigh of relief left Junsu's mouth as he started to float between consciousness and unconsciousness. He was waiting to lose consciousness, he wanted to disappear in the darkest places of his mind where he could not feel anything at all.
Just then, the doorbell rang. The kicking and hitting stopped and he heard the low voice of his father cursing. Junsu didn't register it, his vision blurred with tears, his lips slightly parted as he tried to speak the desperate words on his mind. However, no sound was leaving his mouth, his voice stuck somewhere between his vocal chords and mouth.
He didn't feel how the strong arms of his father lifted his limp body, carrying him to another room. He heard a small sound of disgust before his father dropped his small body on the ground. Junsu's brains didn't register the dull sound of his limp body making contact with the floor, his head lolling to the side, eyelids drooping over his unseeing eyes. The black nothing seemed to caress his wounds, dulling the pain.
He heard his father walking away, leaving the dark room where he had dropped his son. Junsu heard the sound of a door opening. "What is it?" the gruff voice of his father seemed to echo in his blank mind.
"I heard these really weird sounds... is everything alright in there?" Junsu froze. That voice! Suddenly, he started to struggle to keep his consciousness. What was going on? Wasn't that Yoochun's voice?
"Of course... I was just watching a loud action movie. This isn't really any of your business, though." Junsu could hear his father gritting his teeth. It was obvious that his father wasn't amused.
Suddenly, Junsu felt relieved that his father had beaten him up only a few seconds ago. That meant he wasn't going to throw a fit and hurt Yoochun for his nosiness.
"Aaah... I see... an action movie..." It was obvious Yoochun didn't believe the lie. "I'm sorry, don't mind me. I was just passing by... Have fun watching your action movie."
Many questions had started to form in Junsu's mind. Did Yoochun know this was his house? Or was he really just passing by? It all didn't seem to make any sense to him...
However, his body didn't allow him to think. Even though Junsu struggled, he could feel himself slipping into the darkness.

Yoochun looked at the red-painted door. When he had gone to school this morning, he had noticed Junsu's absence. He had asked the teacher for Junsu's address so he could share his notes with his friend. The teacher had believed him and had written down the address of Yoochun's classmate. His heart had stopped beating when he had gotten the piece of paper, his eyes frantically deciphering the scribbled letters.
It was the address where he had heard the beatings.
After he had scrambled his courage, he decided to ring the doorbell. Yoochun refused to think of the consequences if Junsu's father was home. He felt awkwardly protective of his classmate, a feeling he hadn't felt in a long time. He didn't even understand why he felt this protective of someone he barely knew. He only knew he wanted the boy to laugh without worries, to shake off his silent exterior and to never show any signs of fears ever again.
It was a weird feeling.
Thump, thump... His heart was beating so loudly... Yoochun was scared it would jump out of his chest.
Ten seconds passed... thirty seconds passed... a minute passed... nothing. Yoochun frowned. Wasn't Junsu supposed to be ill at home? Or was that just a lie? The boy checked the address again, worried that he had misread it.
After concluding that that wasn't the case, Yoochun frowned in annoyance and started to ring the doorbell once, twice, thrice. Another moment of silence. He realized this meant that Junsu didn't want to talk to him but Yoochun refused to let it slip like this.
He started banging loudly on the door, putting as much power in his fist as he could. "Yah! Kim Junsu! I know you're in there! You'd better open the door or I'll open it with force!"
Another moment of silence. This made Yoochun hesitate - maybe Junsu really wasn't at home.
Then, the door opened. "What are you doing here?" the usual chirpy voice of Junsu sounded cold and distant. Yoochun studied the face of his classmate, noticing how unbelievably pale he was. Junsu was wearing a navy hoodie and a gray pair of jogging pants. While Junsu was clothed in such a simple outfit, Yoochun couldn't help but marvel over his slim body. Yet, it worried him how frail he looked.
"I came to bring your notes. I wouldn't want my dear classmate to fall behind, right?" Yoochun flashed an innocent smile. "Mind if I come in? I know my handwriting is really bad and I can explain you several other things... I could help you with English as well."
~
Junsu didn't know how but Yoochun had managed to invite himself in. Yoochun was going on and on about what had happened at school. "Well, it was a typical school day. I do feel a little bit uneasy around Yunho and Jaejoong, though. It seems as if they're planning something..." he mused to himself.
Junsu forced a weak smile on his face. "They're always planning things. Mostly, they like to joke around with teachers, so don't worry. You want me to refill your drink?"
"Erm... yeah, that'd be nice." Yoochun smiled.
Junsu picked up the teapot and bended forward, refilling Yoochun's cup. Suddenly, he heard Yoochun gasping behind him. A little bit surprised, Junsu looked at his classmate, searching for the reason why Yoochun's dark brown eyes were filled with a mix of surprise, agony and... horror? "What's wrong?" Junsu asked, putting down the teapot while looking around for the trigger of Yoochun's reaction.
"Your... your back," Yoochun stuttered, leaning forward, his hands extended. Suddenly Junsu could feel hands touching the thick fabric of his sweater, pulling the cloth up, revealing his bare skin.
Junsu panicked. He was too ashamed of his body since it was covered badly with bruises. He didn't want Yoochun to see his tarnished body. Above all, he didn't want his friend to discover his secret. Junsu wanted to shake Yoochun off, he wanted to run until his legs would give out, he wanted to hide in the darkest corners of the earth. However, his body refused to move even one inch while he could feel Yoochun's hands lift his shirt.
"Oh my god. What happened?" the shocked voice of Yoochun was echoing through the living room.
"No! No! Don't touch me!" Junsu finally found his voice back, his hands slapping Yoochun's hand away. He tried to get away from him as soon as possible but lost his balance and while his arms flailed hopelessly, they couldn't prevent him from falling on his ass. Not paying attention to his sore butt, he scrawled away, his eyes filled with fear. What was Yoochun going to do now? Would he turn his back to him, not wanting to have anything to do with such a loser like him? Or would he tell other people? Junsu's breath hitched. He regretted letting Yoochun into his house.
"Don't worry... I won't hurt you," Yoochun had sensed the fear in Junsu's eyes. He had realized he had made a mistake as soon as his fingers had touched the fabric of the hoodie. But he couldn't turn away, not now. Not now, when he was so close to discovering Junsu's secret.
Yoochun held out his hand, his eyes gentle and a warm and encouraging smile on his face. "Just... join me on the bench, okay? I don't think the floor is that comfortable."

"It has been a long time since I've seen both my parents smile... When I was younger, they were always arguing. I was a weak child, I was always ill. My mother always wanted to take care of me but she wasn't able to because she was busy working. Instead, Junho took care of me. Even though he was only a few minutes older, he acted like a real hyung." Junsu smiled, reminiscing the old times. Yoochun hadn't pushed him to explain anything at all but the reassuring and gentle smiles of him had encouraged Junsu to trust him.
"My mother felt bad. She didn't want to put so much pressure on a young child and therefore she stopped working. She has always been there for me, she was always taking care of me. Even though it felt really nice, this pressured my father even more. He had to take care of all of us, he started to work more and more. It was really tiresome and stressing for him.
My father was always in a bad mood and I think it's very understandable. The tension in our house started to grow. My parents were always arguing, my father wanted to work less while my mother complained she had to take care of me.
Of course, my father understood her point since he was the man in our house. But understanding is not enough. He had a lot of mood swings and my mother couldn't bear to live with such a man.
One day, my father decided he wanted to liven up the mood. He wanted to go to an amusement park with us. However, my mother was complaining. I had been ill the whole week and my mother started to complain how inconsiderate my father was. He should not only think of himself but also of me and my unstable health.
Then, they had a really big fight. I remember how scary it was. They were screaming and it turned really bad. My mother was saying that my father was only thinking of himself while she had to take care of me and my brother. My father was yelling that he had to do so much more work now, he felt so much pressure and he really felt like collapsing. He said he wanted to do something fun with us because he barely had any spare time now... My mother said he should think of my health as well.
It got so bad... my parents were so mad... And then, my father hit my mother. He couldn't stop hitting even though my mother was crying and screaming for him to stop. I think that was the straw that broke the camel's back. They divorced after that. My brother was allowed to stay with my mother while I had to live with my father."
Junsu let out a sigh. Something in him was relieved - it was the first time he had told anyone about this.
"But... why are you still living with your father after all that he's done to you?" Yoochun said, looking confused. "I can understand your father's pain but he should think of you as well." He leaned forward, his warm hand finding Junsu's cold one. He squeezed lightly, encouraging the boy to go on.
"I can see it... I can see it every day. My father still loves my mother. He's in so much pain... and because of... because of... me." Junsu choked out, tears filling his eyes. "My health became better after the divorce. I think my father felt mistreated. Every time he looks at me, he sees the woman he still loves. Every time he looks at me, he sees the reason why he isn't with her anymore. I caused him to lose the love of his life. They were always arguing about me... I think I deserve this. I was the reason why they broke up. I can't leave my father now, not when I've caused him to lose everything he loved...
I'm the cause of his misery so I should pay the price for it as well."

It was a relief to have finally said everything what had been bugging him for so long. Even though the astounded look in Yoochun's eyes had made Junsu feel uncomfortable, Yoochun had promised not to tell anyone else. It has been a long time since Junsu had trusted someone like that. A faint smile was playing on his lips as he was lying on his bed, a secure feeling washing through him as he sunk further in the soft blankets.
It had been a long time since he had felt this safe and secure.
It felt nice.
