The ConclusionOkie! I think we've covered this pretty well and, at this point, I think we'll veer more into harm than help to keep going. As it's already upset people, that's more than enough (I'm so sorry, guys). So, I'm going to be closing this topic now. This is not the iron boot of authority stamping down, if you want to email or message me you ( Read more... )

Oh, that's a tough one. On the one hand, most Wincest fic is consensual and it's about characters who live outside normal rules most of the time. But I can see how it would make people more uncomfortable in this context.

A personal perspective: one story I was asked to write for Sweet Charity was a scenario that was dub-con at best. That made me much more uncomfortable than the Wincest aspect. Once you start talking about exclusions, can you justify excluding one without the other?

(Also, SPN is by no means the only fandom with incest pairings. Harry Potter and Heroes both have huge followings, too. And I used to write in HTLJ, where no one paid much attention to the incest aspect where the pairings involved the gods. I'm not sure this discussion should focus on just the one fandom.)

It is tough because there's so much validity on both sides ... and incest itself treated so differently between different countries (hell, between states) ... if we weren't raising funds for RAINN, it would be a complete non-issue, is what I'm attempting to find the point of *g*

And, yeah, there's also the dub-con as a complete other thing, which is of course something to thing about and if we keep going that route we're looking at a much wider scale.

Also, eep! I didn't mean to pick on the Wincesters, they're just the ones I get emails about. I'll go correct that, thank you!

Well, as an avid consumer of Wincest, I'll just say that personally, if Wincest wasn't permitted in Sweet Charity, it would dramatically reduce my participation as a bidder. I mean, that's just the pairing that I'm most interested in right now, and in the past, I've mostly bid for the purpose of getting Wincest stories - so if it wasn't available, there'd be a lot less for me to bid on (at least until my next obsession hits ( ... )

..it does seem a little odd to prohibit Wincest (or incest) but nothing else.
The Wincest is just what I got emails about - I think it probably has the highest profile and not being in that side of fandom I confess my ignorance about a lot of genres of fic :) Briarwood pointed this out above and I'm in the process of clarifying in the original post.

I don't think just leaving it to the bidder and seller to work out would be a practical solution, at least for me
No, probably not, but I'm trying to think of some kind of compromise - if you have any thoughts that would be great, chances are good they'll be better informed than mine *g*

One compromise would be to let people write whatever they want, but perhaps agree that pimping incest/dubcon stories on the sweet charity site now that it is RAINN specific might be in poor taste......Just a thought.

I'm going for the compromise option. I've never been comfortable with the notion that the money we raise for RAINN is based on fics that are everything RAINN works against. If people want to write/buy the fic for "theraputic" purposes, let them negotiate it offsite, but it shouldn't be pimped here. All the Sweet Charity Tarts would have to say is "I will also write fic in these fandoms for other genres, subject to negotiation with my buyer" or something like in their auction text and that way, both sides can be free to offer what they want.

I hope those that like to write and read such fics understand that it's not about judging them but preserving the integrity of having a charity auction for RAINN.

I'm a complete wuss about such things, I can't read/request anything even remotely rape/non-con/dub-con...hell, even rough sex puts me off reading something :O

That has always been far more of an issue than the 'cest portion of the auction because even in real life there are loving consenting adult siblings who are quite secure in their sexual relationships :O

I tend to agree that people can offer these things up in their auctions and people are quite welcome to bid on them, but it shouldn't really be actively promoted, since it goes against everything RAINN stands for.

(I am in no way anti-anything so please don't flame me)
