Hi there :) I saw your post @ j_translation and thought I'd add you :) I'm not an ALT, but I work as English teacher as well. I've been in Japan for over 1,5 years now. My Japanese is not as good as yours yet (I haven't studied Japanese at university, but something education related). I hope I can pass 2級 soon, though. It's difficult, though, as I don't have as much time as you ALTs (I work for an eikaiwa).
I always love to read about how other people experience Japan, so it would be nice if you could add me back ^-^/
I hope I can pass the 2級 too. I took it a little over a year ago and failed the kanji/reading section which made me fail the entire exam. 100% on listening though (o^□^o)ノ
