The graphic designer that came with us to Ecuador (check out www.studiothoughtcrimez.com/photojournal) had a nifty little photo viewing/storing/editing thinger - I believe it was the Vista from this company, or something very similar. You'd need to have lots of batteries though, or a proper adaptor for charging the device.
Memory sticks are also called jump drives. You basically stick 'em into a usb port and they're WAY smaller and carry way WAY more stuff than floppies. Here are some randomly googled examples from Lexar this. _nowhere_ bought one for S that has an mp3 player built in - much more portable than taking a cd player with you - and you can fit tons of music on them

Do you have access to a computer in China at all? An alternative method to hold things like pics and vids could be online storage. I subscribe to Streamload where they can charge you as little as $10 for 10gigs worth of downloads. You can upload any amount of data you wish, only the downloads are deducted from your dl account (obviously).
Memory Stick is simillar to what's in your camera. Memory Stick is just a patented name Sony uses for their solid state storage specific to their products (vid cams, digi cams, tvs, printers, computers, etc).
Yeah, I'd also suggest a portable hard drive. Basially, there's the size of a key ring car unlocker, if not smaller, and they hold a LOT of information. And since they're USB, they don't rely on internet bandwidth, but CPU speed, which transfers files VERY quickly. For instance, I once transferred all of my files from one computer to another---about 5GB worth, and it took me about 30 minutes.
With a 56K modem, it would take you 30 minutes minimum to download 5*MB*.
So yeah. Go with a portable hard drive, memory stick, HD Key, USB HD, whatever you want to call them. They're handy. But be careful not to lose them; they're quite readily lost.
