Went to the dentist for the third time in a month. My regular cleaning 3 weeks ago revealed two cavities. The first one was tiny and got filled last week. The one today was a big, honking one

OMG! I'm so sorry you had such a difficult time at the dentist. I'm dentist-phobic and always take a Bonine before I go to take the edge off the visit. I know some actually take a Valium before visits.
My future son-in-law is even more afraid of the dentist and is in the process of needing a lot of dental work. He is on antibiotic and also has more visits ahead.
I saw you were back from Disney World. How was the trip? I know it was rather unbelievably hot down here when you went which totally blows because we were getting unseasonably nice weather up until the last weeks of May. Then BOOM it was hot as Hades and there's a tropical storm in the Gulf flipping Florida the bird.
Hopefully you and the family didn't melt too badly. :)

First time I read this, I saw "Bonnie". I thought "is that a new way of referring to Scotch?" Which was directly followed by "Go ahead with your bad self!" XD
I told my dentist I'd need something before the next filling is done. I just can't go through that again. There are different levels of fear, and I'd hit the terror button. :P
Your future son-in-law has my utmost sympathies! There's nothing quite like tooth pain. Once he's all sorted though, he'll feel a lot better. It's getting there that sucks hard though

We actually had very comfortable weather and a bit more wet weather than is the normal that time of year. For the first time we had to get those rain ponchos to take on and off.
Thank you for those great links. I forwarded them to Jenn. They're great ideas to look into.
When you feel the Novocain wearing off, take a shower. This will keep your muscles in your face from tensing up. I found that this is great in preventing the throbbing pain you might feel. If you are feeling pain after, put the ice packs around your face. Make sure you have a towel to prevent you skin from getting too cold. If you have any topical tooth pain reliever also keep that handy, too.
I always try these approaches before hitting the hard meds. Sorry you had to go through this. I don't fear the dentist or anything but it's my least favorite place to visit.
Oh so sorry you had a rough time. Hugs. I am not a fan of going to the dentist either. Definitely make them put you out cause you shouldn't have to go through all that stress.
I hope the pain pills help. Take them at least for a day or so. HUGS
look in the phone book ad get a root canal specialist. The whole experience is different with these guys. Dentistry has advanced to the point where you should not be having such terrors. Talk to some friends about their dentists. Where are you? Any large city should have better dental care..than what it sounds you've got Good luck.. If you're in NY write to me offline., Selma.
I live in the middle of nowhere Louisiana. The nearest big cities is 40 miles east.
Usually I have some problems with fear when getting a cavity filled, but this time is was just awful. He kept using the bigger of the two drills which vibrates the hell out of your jaw/face as it's going. I kept thinking "It's a really small tooth! It's going to snap in half."
Next time though, they're going to give me a script for medicine to calm me down or get someone in to totally knock me out.
If it comes down to having to pick between a root canal and pulling the tooth though, I'm leaning more towards just having it pulled because the stuff I've read about root canals are terrifying. :(

I'm also going to do the warm water/salt rinse a couple times a day, too because he was so worried about infect.

Yesterday was awful. Today is better. The swelling isn't anywhere near as bad and I'm feeling better mentally and physically.
Took my pills before I went to bed and slept for 12 hours straight. I guess I just wore myself out.
Only real issue I seem to be having is sensitivity, but that's to be expected. :)
