I was Skyping with my boyfriend a while back and he told me that the apartment he and I lived in while I was in Japan was known for it's "thick walls". dude walls in Japanese apartments are so thin. I got lucky with my dormitory, one of my friends called that place a "fortress" (especially when March 11th happened) and I never heard anything from my friend living next door, just outside my front door, I'd hear stuff alllll the time.
and then we stayed in an upscale ryokan and I was kept awake all night by drunk exchange students next door. I wanted to kill them.

Lol~~~! Yeah, I also stayed in a ryoukan and the walls just felt like paper. We could hear the neighbor's TV going off and neither of us could sleep >O
Speaking of the roukan, there was also a really loud mechanical clock going "tick tock, tick tock" the entire night. I think I wope up sometime in the middle of the night and just tore the clock apart, because when I woke up it was in about 5 pieces (although you could put them back together) xD
I need absolute peace and quiet to fall asleep!! :X

I'm having a similar problem in England, where I can hear practically everything going on at my neighbours'. Let's just say the French are quite loud. XD
