I was reading an essay I wrote ages ago, about rational suicide as a right, & started wondering about other people's thoughts on it. My high school English teacher's input was purely toward the essay's technical aspects, so basically, I had no opinion other than my own about the subject.

So, I'm curious..

I agree that people should have the right to end their own lives. I still think it's a weak and cowardly thing to do in most cases, but that doesn't mean people shouldn't have the right to do it. It's their own lives and bodies, and I don't think the government has the right to try to claim ownership of me or my body.

Well, it's not cowardly in ALL cases -- just, IMHO, people don't usually commit suicide because they want to die... they just want a way out of their current situation. And a lot of times, these situations can be overcome if you just persevere and try to live instead of simply ending your life and ruining the lives of the people who love you and that you've left behind. Again, it's not the case all of the time, but when it is I believe it to be cowardly. And I say this as someone who's attempted suicide a couple times (half-heartedly, but still).

But again, just my opinion.

True. There probably aren't as many people out there who are just being practical & ending their lives because they see no further purpose in continuing to live.

& you've attempted?? I should whip you. cause I'm pretty sure that you don't think you've lived your life to the fullest.

No it's not a scary thought because people like you will eventually make a difference in something that should always be the right of the individual and not society or even worse those blasted right to life people and the church

That, to me is far more cruel than letting that person end it with dignity or allowing them the escape from a life that is unbearable.
Yess. And I don't think it's a cowardly thing to do either. It's just saving time, in some cases. It's actually practical.

In the end we came to an agreement that she would at least try to get help before taking the option of suicide but I'd support her decision which ever she made and in the end isn't that what we should really do?
Definitely. I would've done the same things as you. And you're a great friend for doing so :]
